I'll buy those. They definitely are BWS-inspired Bob. Really nice, especially the throwback cover.

In all fairness, not to Dynamite but to Waid and Gold Key, Dr. Spektor far predates Dr. Mirage and it could be said the VH1 character was partially a take on the GK character.MarkRoseHFX wrote:It matches up with their dedication to rip off VEI, like Mark Waid's upcoming Dr Mirage....errr i mean Doctor Spektor bookdornwolf wrote:Bleeding cool has reported Bob Layton is doing some subscription variants for the Solar book

Also, this series was announced prior to the VALIANT announcement of DM...who took a jab at DE by naming it "Death Defying Doctor Mirage" a la the "Death Defying Devil" series published as part of Project: Superpowers.

Re: Bob Layton Does Solar Variants
oh for sure, but this new incarnation of Doctor Spektor is basically the male version of the VEI Dr Mirage. Who had already appeared of course before this book was announced. He's even a "famous reality TV host"BugsySig wrote:In all fairness, not to Dynamite but to Waid and Gold Key, Dr.

Thats right, she did appear in SM before this was announced...didn't see the "reality TV" bit...that's definitely shady, but thats Dynamite for ya.MarkRoseHFX wrote:oh for sure, but this new incarnation of Doctor Spektor is basically the male version of the VEI Dr Mirage. Re: Bob Layton Does Solar Variants
I just find the crticism that DE gets for its 'rip offs' quite funny, as was the idea of it stealing VEI's 'staff'.
Companies have taken ideas and fitted them to their own model for a long time. Hell VEI have employed a strategy that has been associated with DE (but is not DE's alone) with the multiple variants across multiple issues, even those not considered 'key' books. Creators have flitted between companies for a long time.
The introduction of the Houses for VEI as pantheons can be seen as analogous to some of the work DC has done in expanding its mythos back story with the emotional spectrum and the Red/Green/black as conceptual ideas latched onto avatars (Lanterns; Swamp thing; Animal Man; Soloman Grundy etc.).
I am no apologist for DE, but some measure of balance seems to be apt at times.

VEI - I look forward to you one day publishing MORE than 9-10 books per month

Re: Bob Layton Does Solar Variants
The third one looks like it could have been done in 1992. It even looks watercolored. I mean it's clearly a play on Solar 3 but it almost looks lightboxed! Layton is so good he probably just did it freehand, though.

More than a little inspired the third cover has "BWS" underneath Bobs name in the left bottom corner.nycjadie wrote:I'll buy those. They definitely are BWS-inspired Bob. Really nice, especially the throwback cover.

Didn't miss it. Just pointing out that VEI is just as shady as Dynamite, DC, Image, Dark Horse and marvel.xodacia81 wrote:Did you miss where he later said it was taken care of?jedimarley wrote:I wish I could find the thread where Bob Layton publicly embarrassed vei for not paying Mike leeke for work he did for them.

Re: Bob Layton Does Solar Variants
Are we going to see this work by Mike Leeke? Or is it something they paid for but decided not to use?jedimarley wrote:Didn't miss it. If the latter, that makes me feel bad for Mike Leeke. The original Valiant did him that way on a Timewalker story once. He penciled it, it was advertised, then they didn't use it. But he went to a convention and my college roommate, who was with me, remarked how professional Leeke was about it. Then, Valiant later released the story with a different artist, one that I didn't think was as good, and I was surprised they didn't just use Leeke's original pencils.
I wonder if that happens to artists in the comic biz a lot? That would suck to do work for someone and then it not be used...especially a quality artist like Mike Leeke.
For my Valiant: Kindle Worlds stories, check out my amazon author central page, http://www.amazon.com/Richmond-West/e/B ... 204&sr=8-1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Sort by price low to high, and the Valiant Kindle Worlds stories will pop to the top.
