Seems to me that Dynamite will steal everything they can from Valiant: The characters, the writers, and the artists, the marketing techniques, but there seems to be one thing they can't steal: The audience.

Just to be clear: the characters are not and never were VALIANT's - they were licensed. DE has been doing variant covers as a gimmick for many years.

Not defending their other practices, although freelancers of course have every right to work for whoever they choose, just pointing these things out for clarity.

Does Dynamite make good comics? I'm asking in all seriousness, I've never read any that I know of.

I think the reason they jump from one IP to another so often is that their business model is essentially:
license long forgotten IP and make crappy comics out of it, make buzz about said crappy comics, sell enough to turn a profit, dump IP once crappy comic is starting to only break even. Rinse, repeat. Poor GK3.

DE does seem to have what I call "new toy syndrome" once they get a new set of toys they play with like the public domain characters, then the Kirby creator-owned characters, then the Warren characters, then the pulp heroes, now the Gold Key heroes, and so on.

Some of the creator owned series like The Boys and Jennifer Blood have gotten a lot of critical acclaim and are pretty good (well Jennifer Blood is IMHO good).

Yeah, I realised that when I wrote my previous post, but I thought it still carried a bit of weight due to Valiant Fans' sense/feeling of 'ownership' regarding the Gold Key characters. And yes, freelancers can indeed work where they want given the choice.

Unlike Dark Horse, they've never published anything worth reading so I'm not sure why'd they'd start now. Dynamite is exceedingly good at getting licenses, perhaps because they can put together amazing pitches via Ross's art, who has to have a stake in that company, but I've seen no physical evidence of an actual good sustained comic.

Beyond that, beyond some nice cover art in old books, I didn't give a *SQUEE* about Magnus, Solar and Turok before they were in VALIANT, and I don't care about them at all now that they are not in it.

I see no advantage of a deal with Dynamite, those characters don't print money on their own.

The Shadow is a good sustained comic. Excellent. Mark Waid's Green Hornet is another good one.

That said, good Dynamite comics are indeed few and far between...but they exist.

I will undoubtedly be checking out the Turok comic if not all of these.

That's something I've noticed as well. They as a whole, really really want a shared comic book universe and put in just enough effort into them that you could see them working but they just run them dead and buried. The Kirby-verse titles are a great example, blow the horn to announce they have something no one else does and then let it rot on the vine.

They have treated Red Sonja well enough, especially Gail Simmone's latest run. The Pathfinder and Pathfinder Goblins comics were good but not amazing. They are a company that pretty much prides itself on producing 3 star titles.

I enjoyed the first 25 issues of their original Green Hornet series started by Kevin Smith with Britt Reid Jr and the female Kato.
I read the first 9 issues of Vampirella and thought it was fair.
Last Phantom, Warlord of Mars and Lord of the Jungle I also liked but didn't stay past the second arcs.
I'm currently liking Lady Rawhide as well 3 issues in so far.

Their Project SuperPowers is also a refreshing viable alternate superhero universe it just doesn't stay in active publication, which is a shame. The only entry last year was The 5-ish OWL mini series that I recall.

While everything is possible (we can't know for sure without seing the original contract), that would be an unusually tough licence contract. My guess would be that Dynamite has made a mistake.
