I always thought Vertigo lived off of the fame of Sandman for far too long.

There are relatively few Vertigo books that I could get excited about. Off the top of my head, really only Fables, Sandman Mystery Theatre and Madam Xanadu come to mind.nycjadie wrote:I always thought Vertigo lived off of the fame of Sandman for far too long.

I don't know what an imprint is. Is this something special.

Re: Dark Horse is starting a new imprint
An imprint is when one publisher puts out comics under another name, also owned by that publisher.nonplayer wrote:I don't know what an imprint is. Is this something special.
DC's Vertigo is a good example. All these books are published by DC, like Superman and Batman, but they are marketed under the Vertigo name that gives them a certain distinction from Batman and Superman. Most imprints have some sort of theme, like creator owned properties or more mature story-telling. Imprints are a good way for a publisher to segregate and separate their publishing line.

Re: Dark Horse is starting a new imprint
For me, Vertigo had a lot to offer.
In addition to Sandman, some of my favorite stories can be found in the pages of Preacher, the Dreaming, Transmetropolitan, Sweet Tooth, Lucifer, and the Unwritten.
I read Y the Last Man and Fables. Thought they were ok, but others still rave about those tales.
I've yet to read Scalped and only parts of 100 Bullets and American Vampire, but these series certainly have their fans.
I don't know. Seems to me like a strong body of work for the imprint in the comic medium.

I tended to like the lesser known Vertigo books like: User, Blood and Razors, U.S.:Uncle Sam, The Crusades, Veils, I Paparazzi, Dhaphime: Stillborn, and American Century more than Sandman, Y, The Last Man on Earth, V for Vendetta, and Alan Moore's Swamp Thing run.possumgrease wrote:For me, Vertigo had a lot to offer.

I'll definitely look at the stuff they put out. This sounds more like an Image model when they say creator owned than vertigo.
I've read a decent amount of vertigo books and many are among my favorites. When creators are given free reign.... Those are usually the best stories.

I would agree with the principle here, except that I dearly love Sandman, which may be my alltime favorite comic book.Cyberstrike wrote:I tended to like the lesser known Vertigo books like: User, Blood and Razors, U.S.:Uncle Sam, The Crusades, Veils, I Paparazzi, Dhaphime: Stillborn, and American Century more than Sandman, Y, The Last Man on Earth, V for Vendetta, and Alan Moore's Swamp Thing run.possumgrease wrote:For me, Vertigo had a lot to offer.

Wasn't Transmetropolitan part of the Helix imprint?possumgrease wrote:For me, Vertigo had a lot to offer.

Doom Patrol and Animal Man were other good early Vertigo titles.

Initially, but when Helix died they moved Transmetropolitan over to Vertigo.kjjohanson wrote: Wasn't Transmetropolitan part of the Helix imprint?

Re: Dark Horse is starting a new imprint
Knightt might've liked this because he was into the whole dead universe thing, which typically come from small, somewhat unsuccessful or short lived imprints like this. Dark Horse tried this before with their temporarily successful "Comics Greatest World" imprint. Marvel had a Marvel U.K. branch for a while, the New Universe, MAX and more recently Marvel Knights (which really was just a rebranding of street level heroes).
Personally, I'm surprised that Dark Horse isn't cultivating a new CGW imprint with a few key titles with a year of outlined stories to tell, in the hopes of landing films. Ghost, X, and.... hmm... maybe Rebel would be good books to try publishing again.

They sort of did try a CGW reboot. I think it more or less fizzled out.IMJ wrote:Knightt might've liked this because he was into the whole dead universe thing, which typically come from small, somewhat unsuccessful or short lived imprints like this.
