$1 million on comics

Post by StarBrand »

You have $1 million that must be spent on comics in the next 12 months or you lose what you haven't spent. How do you spend it?

I've been accused of answering my own questions, which I continue to deny doing. That said, I'd do some serious buying of Amazing Spider-Man comics and probably spend at least ten grand on archive hardbacks... probably mostly Marvel Masterworks. I'd also stock up on slabbed VALIANT keys.

Seriously I would buy a house and not a comic book. :P

But to answer your question I would buy a lot of 6.5 or higher golden/silver/bronze key issues. :?

One book. The highest CGC graded (unrestored) copy of Action #1 that $1,000,000 could get me.

Honestly, I'd steer away from the single ticket books, and go for 9.4-9.6 silver age gems en masse. It would be a lot of work, but more fun, and I think the payoff could be bigger. Sure, FF 1, Daredevil 1, etc. Also, first appearance Teen Titans, Green Arrow in new costume by Adams, Brainiac, Conan, Spiderwoman, etc.

With the leftovers, I'd go golden age hero CGC copies - Justice, etc. and then get a few copper/modern keys.

I think the real benefit of going this route is not just the books, but all the dealer friends you would make along the way;) Plus, it would be hard to buy that many books with a full time job!

AF #15. Always wanted that one. For some reason when I write this I hear the neighbor's voice from Office Space talking about what he'd do with a million dollars.

If you had to spend it on comics, something tells me you'd buy $1 million in Transformers comics. :D

I'd start with all the Uncanny Xmen & Hulk books I don't currently have in high grade, then make sure to replace any low grade beaters of those titles in higher grades... Then do the same with Iron Man & Tales Of Suspense... And then I'd look into ASM... and Conan...

I don't collect cgc books at all - I meant I'd go for 'raw copies' in high grade, I guess.

Although, to be fair - if I had to burn through a million on comics I'd probably be tempted to go after some high end cgc keys!

RestHAD to spend it on comics.
With aded rule I could never sell for profit.

Sounds wishy washy I would by Magnus R collection?, donate it back to him to start a magnus and valiant museum.

Rest of the money purchase British and Australian comics to archive or display in similar museum style. Early phantom frew are exspensive.

Should easly do both.
I wish their was a Spinal Tap comic, and I had a copy CGC graded at 11.

I would buy all the Marvel Silver Age Mega keys in the 2.0-3.0 range. If buying for myself, I would buy X-men #1-20 in CGC 9.4.

I thought this as well like you I'm not sure..however even if there was 1. I wouldn't buy it (it would be allot of $$$)if I had the million I could afford to buy 2 or 3 Batman adventures 12 unpressed 9.8's get them pressed and hope for a better grade.

I would really avoid BA 12, I think they're just very common. Not saying it won't retain value, but from a risk/reward perspective if you can find big keys, especially low grade keys of books in the $50-70 range you're almost guaranteed not to lose money. A few years back I bought an intact (but low grade) Batman 181 for $30. Stuff like that, do that as much as you can, both graded and raw, everything from the golden age to late silver. Throw in some nice raws on bronze and a bunch of copper keys and you're set!
