Escape from Gulag 396

What a great, touching story. Nice to see more Valiant characters appearing in the Stalinverse. The art is pretty darn good, too.

The backup story, the origin of the Pioneer, was brief as were the others in this arc but pretty interesting as well.

this was excellent, very refreshing after A&A to have a story from someone who has actually read FVL properly. especially liked the little joke with epic of gilgamesh.

Enjoyable story and I'll be looking out with interest to see where and when VEI use this writer next. No Archer and Armstrong goofy nonsense just a well written one shot which fits in well with the rest of the Divinity Stalinverse (albeit no direct link to the main mini). Portella not one of my preferred artists but was suitable for A&A (would not want to see his art on XO or Bloodshot though).

Regarding the Pioneer:

Why does she have a hammer and axe in her origin story, but a single (combined?) weapon in the main Stalinverse story?

This as well as the shadowman tie-in, had emotional weight to it, Archer, putting others before himself.

The Pioneer origin was pretty good, the whole crew (Red Brigade) needs a mini or a one-shot...

I enjoyed this story also. In many ways, this is more how I picture the duo than what we saw in A+A.
