Core Ultraverse reading?

Comic universes no longer active, Bravura, Continuity, CrossGen, Future, Malibu, Ultraverse... and others that are 'no longer with us' today (or only recently brought back).

Core Ultraverse reading?

Post by sbcomics »

If you were crafting your own "Ultraverse Omnibus" of the must-read comics of the Ultraverse, what would you include?

Everything pre-marvel. I loved the Ultraverse and have all but 3 books, but some of it got so bad that the editor of Mantra apologized in the last issue.

That's about it. Can't go wrong with Prime, Rune, Sludge, Strangers ... I also liked Freex and Firearm.

I think at one time or another I've read the first 6-10 of most of these. And at least the first 5 of Hardcase. I read some as they were coming out, which I can barely remember at this point, and then some again 3-4 years ago. But then it was getting unwieldy to keep track of them, and I finished my big reading project for that year and kind of took a break from massive back issue diving. I kind of want to find and read Solitaire if it's worth it.

I would go with the first volumes of Prime, Mantra, Rune, Hardcase, Prototype, Firearm, The Strangers, The Night Man, Ultra Force, and Elven

I think Elven is the only one of those I haven't read at all.

It was a Prime spin-off about a girl who had basically the same powers and origins as Prime did but whereas the boy who became Prime because did so because he was influenced by comics, she became Elven because she was inspired by fantasy novels.

Yeah, I didn't like that one much. Elveen is much more interesting.

-Hardcase
-Exiles
-Break-Thru
-Night Man
-The Solution
-Rune
-Sludge
-Mantra
-Prototype
-Ultraverse Year Zero: Death Of The Squad
and maybe Ultra Monthly just for the heck of it

I want to include Prime as well, but the problem with it is that it's just not that great of a book fundamentally speaking. It its, however, a good character study of what a budding adolescent would do in increasingly adult situations. It's also a decently thought out twist on the typical coming of age story

Though, to be frank, I started getting really tired of the constant need for molestation as a plot device after a while facepalm
