Chimaera shared universe checklist

Comic universes no longer active, Bravura, Continuity, CrossGen, Future, Malibu, Ultraverse... and others that are 'no longer with us' today (or only recently brought back).

Chimaera shared universe checklist

Post by leonmallett »

I have picked up my first few Chimaera Studios issues and I am already hooked; just the kind of comics I like - telling interesting stories with fun art, and not solely focused on moving an 'event' type plot-line along or into place as DC and Marvel seem obsessed with at times.

I thought this could be useful (and will be a work in progress over the next few days for anyone interested). The books from this studio actually appear across at least 3 publishers that I am aware of, as well as a couple of different media. Just to further cloud things, some of Chimaera's own books are not part if the shared universe, so the list is purely intended to pull together a list of what is involved in the shared Chimaera universe. I only plan to add something when it has a confirmed or confirm-able link through another character.

So the (WiP) checklist begins:

Image: found these through mycomicshop listings....
(2003)
Hellhounds 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D, 1E, 2A, 2B, 3, 4

Cellar Door Publishing:
(2005)
Chance of a Lifetime 1

Speakeasy:
(2005)
Lonebow 1
Mutation 1, 2, 3
Super Crazy TNT Blast 1 (22 pgs)
Wargod 1

Markosia:
(2006)
Mutation 1AA, 1B
Mutation GN (2006; collects Speakeasy issues - Speakeasy only published only 3 issues; this has the unpublished 4th issue)
Silent Ghost 1, 2

Chimeara Studios (downloads and PoD):
(2008)
Consortium of Justice 1, 2, 3
Wargod (vol. 2)/aka Wargod: Absolution 1, 2, 3

Chance of a Lifetime 1 (presumably reprinting the Cellar Door Publishing issue, or possibly only the first half as the page count is only 24 pages, with a revised cover with no embossing)
Hellhounds: Naked Truth 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Hellhounds: Naked Truth GN

download only:
Chance of a Lifetime 2 (2nd half of the #1 issue previously from Cellar Door)
Lonebow: Origin 2 (second half presumably of the originally published Speakeasy issue)
Naked Kate Courier Broad 1
Vanguard Tales 2 (WOWIO; WOWIO no longer lists Vanguard Tales 1, but it is shown on the pretty much inactive CS site)

The current total of issues for a print reading set is 21 (plus an unpublished issue included in the Mutation GN).

RPG - published by Mongoose Publishing
Also produced by the Chimaera guys. The core book has a timeline and some B&W preview pages of story in it, as does the companion book.
Chimaera Roleplaying Universe
Hellhounds Companion Book

EDITS: for updates etc.

Speakeasy around 2005-6; Markosia around 2006 or so. Not sure on the PoD, but it looks like the last new additions were circa 2009.

Reading the Mutation GN and another book (Chance of a Lifetime) adds CoaL to the list. By another publisher! LOL. :D

An iteration of CoaL's star (The American) appears in Mutation #2 from Speakeasy (and in the GN).

Reading the Mutation GN last night and Chance of a lifetime, as well as the first Wargod issue a couple of nights ago, and I have to say I love this little lost universe, even if assembling a reading set will be a patchwork!

This seems strange to me... a shared universe produced by one studio but published by multiple publishers. Strange, but interesting. Were these books all published during the same time period?

The time period looks to be 2003-2009, but I am trying to nail it down. The Cellar Door version of Chance of a Lifetime has the Chimaera logo on the inside cover. It gets weirder - some of the books appear to have been first published by Image in 2003! These were later available through Indy Planet under the Chimaera imprint.

A lot of the characters seem to be created/co-created by George. T. Singley, while some were created by others, yet all can be linked together (for example Mutation features a lot of cameos; Consortium of Justice is a team book). I thoroughly recommend the Mutation GN by the way!

I am only going to add books that can trace a clear inclusion on reading, even if by degrees of association.

One thing for sure, the creator(s) must have really believed in these characters to stick with it like they did.

I think you are right.

Every book I have read so far I have enjoyed though, so for me it is probably one of those situations where they simply did not find a big enough audience.

I am looking forward to working my way through the rest. :)

The Andy Smith book (Armor X) is its own thing I *think*. The 'signature' stuff seems unconnected, but deeper reading will support or disprove that.

The other characters in the books in the list above have links through appearances which is why I thought about assembling this as a shared universe list. :)

Unfortunately, I think I have found more to add! Project Eon (Markosia) links to Mutation by appearing in the Mutation series from Speakeasy (collected in GN form by Markosia). Need to pick up Project Eon now...

In publishing terms t is looking that way, but I have yet to pick those books up.

In their timeline, Chance of a Lifetime precedes the current time and is set in and around WWII.

Some of the PoD stuff arrived today (yay!): Consortium of Justice 1-3 and Wargod (volume 2) 1-3, both are dated 2008, so currently the window looks like 2003-8. Or so. :D

And of course each time I think I understand the boundaries of what is in, something else pops up! :kidaround:

They will be forthcoming once I have a second or third read through!

Project EON collected edition arrived today, and it looks like that even though the Eon character is clearly in Mutation, and Chimaera are credited with helping the book get to Markosia, and one of the co-writers is also strongly associated with Chimaera (James T. Mitchel), this does not technically count as part of the line.

The matter gets distorted further by the fact that there is a character in the Chimaera 'Consortium of Justice' book who looks very similar to Eon, but happens to have a different code-name (Atomic Kid)...

Still digging further; this article supports my suspicion that the Mutation GN features an issue that never saw publication (chapter 4 of the GN): http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=6216" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I really wish that the main guy was accessible, but he seems to be consciously off the radar as far as i can tell; I'd have a ton of questions for him!

Super Crazy TNT Blast seems to be in this mix, but won't be 100% sure until I get hold of the single issue that was published by Speakeasy.

Markosia were due to carry on Super Crazy TNT Blast with announced issues, but I cannot find them with all my searching (the first was a 50 cent #0 issue).

I have on order what I *believe* are the last remaining issues I need for a reading set.

Having read Consortium of Justice and Wargod (vol. 2; aka Wargod: Absolution) I really enjoyed them. But there is a big 'but'....like any self-respecting DU ( :D ) they both end unresolved! Agh! :)

The same seems to apply to the second volume of Mutation which only had a single issue (albeit with 2 covers).

Interestingly Armor X (by Andy Smith) seems to have lived at 3 ublsihers: Image; then Chimaera as its own thing; then 2011 as a tpb through Dynamite.

I doubt the 2011 TPB is in the same direct continuity. I have the TPB and it doesn't feel like a part of a bigger story.

Another title, not yet on the list though. I am 99.9% sure it is part of the same universe as the characters appear in Consortium of Justice, but i want to see who has ownership before declaring it 'in'; the indicia should take care of that.

Only one issue was published (by Speakeasy). Markosia were supposed to publish the title as Twilight Men and were advertised as releasing a '#0 issue for 50 cents, but I don't believe that actually appeared. Amazon and other books sites have a listing for an unpublished collected edition (under the title Super Crazy TNT Blast). A real maze this small line!
