Discuss Black And White 80s Comics And Publishers

Comic universes no longer active, Bravura, Continuity, CrossGen, Future, Malibu, Ultraverse... and others that are 'no longer with us' today (or only recently brought back).

I put Dale Keown's name next to Aircel in parenthesis in the top post. I want to add notable titles and creators to the top post in this manner. If anyone has any suggestions as to which titles or creators should be added to the top post next to the name of a publisher, please post so in this thread. Thanks.

It looks like starting tomorrow I won't be online more than two or three times a week for awhile. Please keep the info coming, if you have it, and I'll update the top post in this thread as I am online. I really appreciate it.

This is a post Greg made elsewhere on the board. It applies to this thread, so I'm copying and pasting it below. Maybe it will jar someone to comment. I'll go through and investigate Greg's info as time permits.

I randomly checked Tiger Comics from Greg's list. Mycomicshop doesn't have them listed as a publisher, so I'm already thinking it's somewhat obscure. I was able to do an internet search and find the following image. Lots of big name creators worked on this book. I'm assuming it's black and white interiors, until I get more info, and listing Tiger Comics in the top post. It just feels like a black and white book. I'm deleting Tiger Comics from Greg's list. I also deleted other publishers from Greg's list, either because I knew we already had listed them, or because I knew they were color publishers. I wouldn't be surprised if I left a few on Greg's list that we've already got on the top post. Just going from memory on that for now.

An eBay search for Phantasy For Hunger (Tiger Comics) shows six individual copies for sale, non of which are from Mycomicshop. :hm: This book has the feel of an underrated gem to me, in view of the quality of creators that worked on it, and the seeming rarity of the book.

I like using MyComicShop and ComicCollectorLive for research on these DUs. Mile High can be awfully unreliable, listing many, many comics that were solicited but never saw print, even comics from the 80s that were never printed. eBay is another good source to mine for data.

In some cases, I won't list it if I can't see a cover.

There was also another company called Valiant Comics in the late '80s that published in B&W. Only one series with two issues came out though, titled Valiant Efforts.

Caliber Press
Comics Interview
Dragon's Teeth
Gatekeeper Publishing
Hard Boiled Comics
Megaton Comics
Metro Comics
Pyramid Comics
Valhalla Comics Group

Yes. One of the great things about having a separate sub-section is that we can have a section that is just the checklists.

Sorry I haven't kept up on the top post as well as I could have. When I started this thread I didn't realize I'd be cutting back my time on the internet to the degree I've had to. I do intend to work on it as I go, and hope to be online on a regular basis within a reasonable time period.

Yeah, Caliber was very good, gave us The Crow originally, but I think the best thing they put out was Caliber Presents, great anthology with King Zombie, Crow, etc.. never were a ton on the shelves but great if you can find them.

I like the original Ex-Mutants. Trollords was surprisingly an enjoyable read. Vietnam Journal, Days of Wrath and Days of Darkness are great war comics.

Thanks for your help on this. I verified and added these publishers to the top post in this thread, and denoted Hard Boiled Comics as a 90s publisher. I didn't add Valhalla Comics Group, which I could find no information on. Could you provide any details on Valhalla? Thanks. again.

Mile High lists four titles from them, all one issue each:

ACME [Backissue]
AGENT ORANGE [Backissue]
BOMARC: GUARDIAN OF THE IFS ZONE [Backissue]
POWER PRINCIPLE [Backissue]

The cover of Agent Orange looked decent, but the rest looked like drek to me.
