That's awfully racist of you to segregate the publishers that way. :kidaround:

Oh my, an interesting question. I was looking into these a couple of years ago as it seemed they would be a good extension of my interest in the dead universes. The problem was that few put out anything that interested me. Some companies were already publishing and jumped on the black and white bandwagon because they would sell. The mid-80s Black and White Explosion was really a lot like the early 90s speculator boom in comics on a smaller (but not as much smaller as you would think) scale. Publishers sprung up overnight and published UTTER CRAP and young comic book stores bought it by the pallet load and turned a lot of books. It worked for about 18 months and then overnight people quit buying and the whole system fell apart. Lots of comic shops went out of business because they were too tied up financially in these piles of now-worthless books.

Like the 90s speculator boom, some good did come out of the black and white explosion. Ninja Turtles really kicked the whole thing off and Cerebus was in the right place at the right time to really benefit from it. Grendel and Nexus both began in the B&W explosion as black and white books. Nexus volume 1 no. 3 came with a flexi-disc record bound into the magazine, probably the coolest gimmick ever.

Several of the forerunners to Malibu started out during this time. Eternity, Pied Piper, Adventure, Amazing and Wonder Color all were B&W publishers started by Scott Mitchell Rosenberg. Malibu's first forays into publishing were black and white but a bit after the B&W explosion. Interestingly, SMR financially backed Eternity, Pied Piper, Adventure, Amazing and Wonder Color (and maybe another one called Imperial?) as a corporation but he more directly owned Malibu. Maybe that is why Malibu was the one that the others were folded into? Later on, Malibu acquired Aircel, another b&w publisher that started out making home insulation in Canada. The Men in Black movies are based on an Aircel property (now a part of Marvel and therefor Disney). Aircel became an adult imprint and much of their catalogue is for mature readers.

Eclipse, Blackthorne and Comico went both B&W and colour. I think Innovation may have put out a selection of b&w books too? Blackthorne especially flooded into the b&w market. Dark Horse started out that way too.

Other random ones that come to mind -

Victory Comics - set up by a man named Reggie Byers to publish his comic, Shuriken
Apple

This is so frustrating that I cannot think of more. I need to start going through boxes. I found an article a couple of years ago where a guy who lived through it gave his perspective on the black and white explosion. Fascinating stuff.

Very good write-up, Chiclo. You really need your own blog. Getting ready to leave for work, but I'm going to go through this and post the companies you name soon.

I see you didn't add Blackthorne. If you're doing this simply as an exercise in which publishers were around during the B&W explosion in the 80's, you need to add these guys, as like Chiclo said, they simply flooded the market with tons of B&W books, most of them of poor quality. I don't consider Comico part of that group because by the time the B&W Glut happened, Comico had already switched over to color books. I would definitely add Eclipse, as their Adolescent Radioactive Black Belt Hamsters were the first major swipe of the Turtles, though many companies would do the same later. Dark Horse was another one that needs to be added, as Boris the Bear and Concrete were huge hits as B&W books.

Aaaargh! Comics (The Crypt, don't remember this one being a huge hit, but it was around)

Aardvark-Vanaheim (A-V was around way before the Turtles and the glut, but I'm sure Sim did capitalize a lot on the sudden interest in black and white books, it was when I first tried Cerebus. They also published quite a few other titles before Deni took them with her to Renegade Press.)

Crowquill Comics (Eb'nn the Raven was a big title at the beginning of the B&W glut)

Arrow Comics (The Realm, Deadworld)

R.A.K. Graphics (Thundermace was another early hot book)

Harrier (the first issue of Redfox was definitely a wall book at the time)

Thoughts & Images (Albedo was red hot in those days, and still hold quite a bit of value today)

Fishwrap Productions (Fish Police were also huge)

WaRP Graphics (Elfquest, like Cerebus was a precursor to the B&W Glut.)

Fantagraphics (Critters was a big success early with regular Usagi Yojimbo appearances. Love and Rockets was also hot)

Crystal Publications (Eagle)

Slave Labor (one of my favorites, Samurai Penguin, It's Science with Dr. Radium)

Solson (similar to Blackthorne, in my opinion, as they both flooded the B&W market with crappy books)

Planet X Productions (Geriatric Gangrene Jujitsu Gerbils)

Prelude Graphics (Gnatrat)

Rip Off Press (even underground publisher Rip Off Press got into the act with Miami Mice)

First Comics (they were mainly color, but Lone Wolf and Cub was a huge B&W hit for them)

So I did a little thinking today. I am guessing based on the date of the Malibu Related and Apocrypha checklist I put together that I read that article I remembered in October 2010. Nearly 3 years ago and nothing to go on but my fairly reliable memory and google. I found it within an hour.

Black and White and Dead All Over
http://classic.tcj.com/history/a-comics ... -part-two/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Written by Gary Groth and published in The Comics Journal 116, July 1987. An interesting contemporary article about the black and white explosion, broken into five pages, pages 3 through 5 are most interesting to me. It is part two of a three part series. I will read the other two parts tomorrow.

I read an interesting tidbit about Solson publishing while I was digging this article up. The company was started by Sol Brodsky's son Gary. Sol-son.

I think Antarctic Press and NEC New England Comics both belong in this list too. Although they are both still publishing in colour today, they both started out in the mid-80s publishing independent black and white comics. NEC publishes the Tick while AP publishes Gold Digger and Warrior Nun Areala.

I ran across a lot of names of the old B&W companies that only put out a few issues and folded. Bro J mentioned a few already (you really need to pick his brain, I am not even close to his league on this kind of thing). KZ Comics and Orestes Comics both stuck with me.

I added the suggested publishers to the top post in this thread. I added BrotherJ's specific titles that he attached to his suggested publishers, when he suggested them.
Please let me know if you guys can add any other black and white 80s publishers, or titles that highlighted those publishers' work. (Maybe we should add key creators in parenthesis next to the publishers listing?) Or, if you find any mistakes in my editing the top post. Thanks.

Are you wanting to make checklists? I started making some checklists for these. I will post those in the Dead Universe Checklists section and post links to the threads here (those threads get buried too easily because of all the frelling stickies).

We already have checklists for a few of these. I will do some leg work.

I added Pioneer. They were a publisher that started in the late eighties, and seemed to specialize in black and white reprints. Looks like they had some pretty cool stuff.

Arrow Comics (thanks to Bro J)

Malibu and Apocrypha Checklist
viewtopic.php?f=40&t=32249" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
This checklist includes Eternity, Pied Piper, Wonder Color, Imperial, Amazing, Adventure, Aircel and Victory. All of those publishers started out in the 80s as b&w publishers even though a few survived the implosion under the Malibu umbrella and published some in colour. Early Malibu definitely fits the category as well.

Silver Wolf and Greater Mercury comics (thanks to kpaquett)
viewtopic.php?f=40&t=38238" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
These two companies were both run by Kristoff Silver and featured many of the same characters.

Solson Publications (new!)

Blackthorne Publishing (new!)

Capital Comics does not have a checklist in the DU section but it's a pretty short one. Capital was the publishing wing of Capital City Distributing, probably the last major distributor to challenge Diamond. They were not the only distributor to try publishing and rarely did both work in the long term for any company.

Capital Comics

Badger 1, 2, 3, 4 (continued publication with First from 5 onward)
Nexus v1 1, 2, 3
Nexus v2 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 (continued publication with First from 7 onward)
Whisper 1, 2 (continued publication with First beginning a second volume with a new number 1)

There are a couple of publishers that published comics in the 80s in both colour and b&w and took advantage of the b&w fad.

Comico (thanks to Knightt)

First (thanks to JohnnyRnR)
viewtopic.php?f=40&t=13913" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
First carried over the two properties from Capital

There are a few companies we put together checklists for that fit thematically with these other publishers but not as well historically. Mostly from the early 90s, these are black and white indy publishers. A few continued characters that first appeared in some of these b&w glut era books, like Adolescent Radioactive Blackbelt Hamsters.

Interesting stuff! I culled your above post, Chiclo, and added the companies that weren't listed to the top post. I added the ones that were 90s publishers also, and denoted them as such.

I did a little mining and turned up a few more companies and checklists. FantaCo may not fit entirely within the parameters we are looking for but they definitely started out as a b&w in the 80s. I also looked at Americomics - they started out as b&w in the 80s but are still publishing today. Probably fits in the same file as Dark Horse, Antarctic Press and NEC. Some of these sound pretty bad - like the Official Comics Enquirer Swimsuit Price Guide. Some sound like they may be worth tracking down, like Steel Pulse Pro-Wrestling Adventures.

I added Silverline, which was mentioned in a different thread. One of their titles, Cat and Mouse, looks interesting. I might have to check it out. It looks like Cat and Mouse went to Aircel after Silverline.

I copied and pasted chiclo's checklists to the top post in this thread. Still need to integrate his most recent list of 80s black and white companies.
