Smash con 2014
This is a small con in Southern California. It's writers and artists who are affiliated a certain character I believe, this year with Hulk and Wolverine. Of course this show was all about Clayton Crain for me! We chatted a bit about some of the commissions he's done for valiant fans (and if you haven't gone to the sketch thread you really need to do yourself a favor and do that!) and I finally broke down and am getting my first commission from him. It was a lot of fun chatting with him. From this show my favorite sketch was Rai by Jimbo Salgado. This man is so talented, amazing he is not working more! Fun chatting with Len Wein. He commented on how bored my daughter seemed so I shared my Jack Kirby story, which everyone laughed over. Joe Rubenstein was cool as was Herb Trimpe, though he seemed a bit over worked. It was tough all around because there was no A/C and it was 104! They only had fans for the show guests. But I got 3 Death of Wolverine 1 chrome cover and 1 Canadian variant signed by those three. Some cos play people. Matt Hawkins, Whilce Portacio, Danny Mikki and few others were there. I noticed people left early or maybe never showed which was more disappointing, but like I said this show was all about chatting up Clayton. We had one fun exchange while he was signing a few Rai ones for me (I kept to less than 5%of what I have! Lol) and he asked about the pullbox plus edition. I showed him and he said it was cool. I was surprised to find out he did not have one, so what could I do? I told him it would be my honor to give him a copy! He laughed and said "look it's even signed!" To which we all laughed. I even shared the story from Collectors Paradise signing of Delinquents where a fan (the couple rom Arizona, sorry I forget your names right now ) and how we were arguing over Clayton for a bit before we realized we were talking about two different people. He laughed over that. I am looking forward to getting the grades on my Rai gold and Pullbox that I had cgc'd. ss is always so fun. Small con and a few hours but it was worth the $20.. And the drive.

Was this the one at Frank & Son's? Was Chris Bachalo there?

Yes it was and no I did not see him. There were several people who left early, came late or didn't even show up! What can you do?

Yep, that seems to be pretty common for cons these days!
What sketch are you having Clayton do? Rai, I would imagine?

So many shows in the Southern California area...
Saturation seems to be setting in on a few of them

Re: Smash con 2014
IMO, it was not a con, more of a gathering of artist, which is COOL, but it is not a con.

I would agree it was not really a con. But it was pretty cool.

Re: Smash con 2014
By the same token what makes a con? Artists? Check. Writers? Check. Lots of vendors selling everything comic related? Check, check. It was a large location, I think there was probably more vendors there than Long beach. But yes it does not feel like a con and there were no panels. Re: Smash con 2014
But all the vendors and other stuff is the same thing they have every sat and Wednesday.
They just had some artists (which is cool) set up at frank and sons.
I love Franks, but it is no con.
I talked to a Franks vendor today, he said the business and traffic was like every other sat.
