Harasssment at SDCC

Post by depluto »

So I keep reading stuff in the mainstream press about how sexism and harassment of females was out of control at San Diego this year. As a dude who will be bringing his then-14-year-old daughter next year (if I can get some damn tickets) I was wondering if anybody saw this.

Last two times I was there I really didn't see this sort of thing at all ... maybe some picture-taking dudes that were kind of weird but I took them to be harmless.

I've gone off on dudes before for gawking at my daughter (nothing quite like screaming at somebody in a crowded grocery store "Dude! She's only 13!") but that was for blatant leering. If somebody grabbed at her, it might get ugly. I can get just about anybody under 185 pounds up over my head pretty easy and bring them down Bane-style on my knee.

SDCC has to lead the world in per capita leering.
I actually did not see as many ..... Um .... Of those types of cosplayers.

I saw nothing of this sort of thing. I think considering the amount of people that are there and the skimpy dress of some females the percentage of incidents is actually lower than everyday life. That being said any amount of harassment is not ok. As long as you keep her with you I am sure it'll be fine. Also I have a feeling that anything she could wear that would be revealing and perhaps provoke or entice such harassment wouldn't be ok with you anyway.

Meh.

I think it's more likely that Adrianne Curry is trying desperately to stay relevant because nobody cares about her. Her friend gets harassed so she chases the guy down and beats him up? Please. It sounds more like a publicity stunt than anything else. I remember seeing her at a booth a couple years ago. She was dressed up as Aeon Flux and charging for pictures. She even had a great big guy standing in front of her to try and stop unpaid for picture taking. I don't think she made much money. I think she even got kicked out that year for wearing butt floss.

I think your daughter will be just fine. Especially if you follow her around wearing a wrestling mask. :thumb:

That's what I thought, fellas. I'm sure that stuff goes on, but I never witnessed it and didn't get that vibe from the crowd.

If a woman or man is in a revealing outfit, guys and girls are going to gawk and look at him or her. Period.

Now, there's a point when staring becomes uncomfortable, although I'm sure folks' tolerance will vary. Touching or making rude comments is definitely grounds for a fat lip, but a person who dresses provocatively, whether male or female but gets upset when people simply look at them are either clueless or looking for a reason to get upset.

This is the story I read on Time; it almost makes it seem like thousands of girls were being oppressed and dry-humped by a teeming horde of oversexed nerd-boys.

http://time.com/3045797/women-comic-con ... -petition/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Geeks for CONsent emphasizes that “cosplay does not equal consent,” meaning that dressing up like a character (in a revealing costume or not) does not mean that women are inviting men to ogle or fondle them.
True enough, I suppose. I just didn't see it in my time there. Maybe some ogling, but how is that defined? A girl has her boobs hanging out and poses for hundreds of pictures but doesn't want to be looked at?

Basically, what I'm saying is I feel comfortable bringing my daughter there, and I'm not going to worry about it. As far as giant gatherings of young people go, it's probably one of the least sexualized.

All encompasses my views as well. I have a daughter too, and if anyone touched her, I'd *SQUEE* rip their balls off and shove them so far up their *SQUEE* *SQUEE* that they'd throw them up. And, I feel overly protective over women/girls in general. But no, I did not witness a single incident myself.
Sure, it's hard not to look, and everyone looks. But, talking smack, or touching? I didn't see a single instance of it.

I just remembered that I did hug a girl at sdcc. Elveen was there. She seemed very receptive to it.

Only she wasn't cosplaying. It was just some random chick who asked if we were standing in line for something, and I told her it was the line for hugs.

True story.

What were we talking about again?
