BayouCon

Post by Heath »

Just got back to the hotel from BayouCon 4 in Lake Charles, LA. I'll post some pics tomorrow,. Had a pretty good time, but didn't buy anything. Good costumes. The actors who played Gowron and Martok (Klingons from Star Trek) were there and did a panel in full costume and in character. I talked to the owner of Paper Heroes (the only comic shop in Lake Charles and one of the few in Louisiana) about the VALIANT relaunch. He said he's sold about 10 copies of each issue. He didn't order enough to get any variants, and he didn't order any 2nd printings because he still has stock of 1st printings.

I'm pretty tired, but the mini fridge in my room is buzzing really loud and I can't go to sleep. I'd unplug it, but my wife has it stocked.
I would agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

My two favorite costumes from the con... Orion Slave Girls and an Andorian as Hunter S. Thompson.

Looks like a blast, Heath! Never seen that many Orion slave girl costumes in one place. No matter what she looks like, paint her green and this old Trekkie's heart just goes all pitter-pat (MOST of the time). :lol:

Was it mainly a Star Trek / cosplay convention? I've always wanted to go to a straight up Trek con, but haven't had one come around in ages.

I just checked that guy out. Pretty cheesy and weird, but the jazz standards on his music page are SOLID!

It's not a straight up Trek con, but Trek is by far the most represented. The ratio of cosplayers to "normal" geeks is much higher than any other con I've been to (not that that has been a lot). The first and second years I went, there was a LOT of Star Wars costumes. I missed out last year, but this year I didn't see any of the SW fan groups that were there in previous years.

Next year will be BayouCon 5. I sent the organizer a suggestion to get someone from Babylon 5. "B5 at B5" is too good of an opportunity!

I found my thread for the previous years: viewtopic.php?f=22&t=27186" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The first year it was called ConDuLac (Convention on the water). It was renamed BayouCon the second year.
I would agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

Here's a video I took and uploaded to YouTube. This was during the "Klingon Summit" with Gowron (Robert O'Reilly) and Martok (J. G. Hertzler). They saw the "Orion's Envy" girls in the audience and called them up on stage and it led to this. (I think that is Martok howling at the beginning.)

And here's a video that "Orion's Envy" produced, if you're interested. Half of it is rather boring, though.

Larry Nemecek (Star Trek fans should know that name) makes an appearance at 4:14 and 6:31.

I would agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

I'm heading back to BayouCon again tomorrow (Saturday). My 5th time to attend in 6 years. And for the first time ever, I have a costume prepared...
