I actually thought about going because I love Karen Gillan. But that is the weekend I am going to Tx for a wedding, and if you go to their page you have to be worried about the organizers when you look at how they have messed up the pictures names of guests!
Anyone going who could score me a Gillan autograph?

So hopeful for this show. I've heard a few things that make me think it's going to be a good good show.
And anyways..... I'll be eating like a champ!

Re: Wizard World Reno
Convention was actually very small at the Reno Convention center and like most Wizard shows revolved around the Movie and TV celebrities they have coming to them. If you frequent west coast shows the comic dealers are pretty much the same at each of these shows. I notice lots of familiar faces of those running booths. Because I do a ton of shows they recognize me as well. This is both a good thing and not so much. The bad... I've seen what they have to offer, the good I do get a good price for things that I do find.
I did find a few Valiant books and VEI variants but trust me they are far and few between.
Found and purchased
X-O Manowar #2 VH-1 (6) at $1.00
Shadowman #2 1:25 variant $1.00
Unity #1 3D variant CGC 9.8 $40
Those where the only Valiant/ VEI books that I found worth purchasing at Wizard World Reno
All I heard from Dealers at this show was how BAD it was. They weren't making any money at it.
I found a conversation with Elveen about this to really drive home what this means. He pointed out that it's Wizards responsibility to bring convention people through the doors and they did that. There were times that the place was packed and they might not have been spending money on comic books but that's something you really can't control. There is only one comic shop in Reno and they didn't even represent themselves in any way for this show. From what I was told they were asked to and declined. Puzzling to say the least. That being said Elveen is something of a rare dealer, he engages with each person who comes to his booth. This is unusual in this business and it breaks the mold. MOST dealers sit (or stand) watching you go over there boxes and never say anything unless you speak first. This goes on at MOST booths in every show across the country. Christian builds relationships that not only people remember and that might create a sale at that show but people remember that relationship and come back when the show returns again the following year. So again this was Reno's first Wizard show most likely not the last and the way he conducts himself at his booth instead of complaining like all the other dealers at the show will and should help him at next years show.

Re: Wizard World Reno
Thanks for the review. I find the more I'm in the comic books the more curious I am about what's going on. I know I can't make every show between work and family but I figure the more information I cumulate the better off I'll be. I completely agree with your review of Christian of course.glad you were at least able to find a few things so it wasn't a bad trip.

Re: Wizard World Reno
Thanks for the words B.
Business wise, if it was a local show with little bills, it would have been an above good show. But it cost me a bunch to do the show (table, van rental, hotel room, gas , food) so business wise it was ok.
I can tell you that Wizard was stoked for the show. The attendance was above good. They also make a MINT on the show biz stuff.
A Norman Reedus VIP tix ( with weekend pass) cost $315. And they sold a bunch.
They already have signed up for next year in Reno, so that says something.
I will agree with B about seeing the same dealers, there is for sure a group of oh West Coast dealers that do all the shows. But.....
There was also a fair amount of new comic dealers that was there and I got some great deals. So that part of the show was an A+ for me. In fact, I think I spent more at this show than I have at any show I have set up at. I got some real deals.
(For example - I got an ASM 700 for $1. And a few other real good deals.
I am big fan of the way Wizard World does shows. Very organized and everybody is super cool and helpful. The show guests at for sure Hollywood centric, nut it is also a comic show.
I did do a lot, and I mean a lot, of educating about "comics" to peeps. Many many 1st time peeps. But I'm just building relationships and that is always good.

I had some GREAT deals at the show. Like a $50 book for a buck. Some really great finds.
Some of the dealers make all their BIG $$ before the show opens. I'm talking about thousands of dollars before the doors even open.
I do about half of my back stock building the day before the show opens.
At some of the local so cal shows, it's like a dealer feeding frenzy before the doors open.

I have had tables at gun shows in Amarillo on several occasions and those gun shows worked much the same way.

When did Wizard World start hosting shows at smaller markets?

Re: Wizard World Reno
They have been trying to since the new company bought it a few years ago. The problems start because there are so many shows already that people have a set routine so to speak. They plan and budget according to that, and then these smaller local shows start popping up. Wizard knows they can't compete with the big shows so they are trying to squeeze out the smaller ones. They also prefer to be a "pop cultural" event vs. comic book convention.
