They fluctuate in price. I typically see $10-20 at shows for mid to low grade. A huge cache of warehouse stock came out a few years ago that lowered the average cost considerably, but it’s on the rise again. I’m fresh out, and I’m not sure what the average VF-NM goes for, but it’s probabl higher than I realize. Expect to drop $10 for a decent copy, with some much higher. The Random House Variant might be the most expensive variant of V1 and Acclaim, and perhaps the rarest.

Awesome info, thank you! I will have to dabble in some eBay. Any recommendations on what the best ones are? I'm more just curious to check out how the pre-VU comics were made.

The Sneak Peek book is the grail. The Random House book is incredibly rare. There are price variants and all sort of 2nd prints, but I may be the least informative on these. I do not have a full set. It’s never been a focus. I get things here and there when they are reasonable.

If you PM me your address I'll send you a copy of Legend of Zelda #3. It's been sitting around my house for the last few years. I probably found it in a dollar box and bought it just because.

I just took a look at it and laughed because there's an Acclaim ad on the back cover.

Raw, condition isn't really important, reader copies are fine. Just curious to check these out and see some of the early work that led to the VU

You might want to try to grab one of the hardcovers then. Or even one of the oversized TPBs.

Really the regular books should be plentiful and cheap in low grade. They were produced in large numbers and sold outside the direct comic market. The problem seems to be that you find people will small groups, one/two/three and never enough to make it worthwhile. And then the properties, like Zelda and Mario, are still very collectible across two generations so the price of entry is $5+/book if you are lucky. And even more surprising... the stories and art are pretty good. Shooter wrote some of these and there is BWS art and others. One of the Captian N's is Quesada's first published art I believe.

But all of them are "findable". The Random house variant is probably the hardest as nycjadie pointed out but it's a reprint. I've also found the NCS 7 (the only NCS with a Zelda cover) and the last Captain N a little harder than the others. The SMB Special Edition is also tough because people hold onto that one as the first Valiant comic.

When I was doing shows I sometimes had these on hand and they always sold well from the wall. I had them on hand because I bought them like crazy on eBay looking for 9.8s and rarely found any.

If you end up needing any detailed information let me know, I have these down to a science.

CKB - Is there a list of the 2nd prints/price variants anywhere? I haven't seen a definitive list.

I think all WWF/Wrestling books are 1st prints.

Nintendo books have a secret: If the barcode is on the left, it's a 2nd print (or reprinted stories). If the barcode is on the right, it's a 1st print. Don't tell anyone. :gossip:
(I think Captain N #3 is the only one that violates the rule, but there are no 2nd prints of Captain N.)

So for a long time I used Quenton's site. He had these all cataloged story by story so you knew what was reprinted where. That page was mainly content focused and was not (trying to be) authoritative on the variants. We've discovered more since he did that page, anyway, it was a long time ago. Not sure if that page is archived anywhere any longer. Greg does have a checklist on this site, but his goal is not to cover all the crazy stuff with that spreadsheet.

So I guess really the answer is no. Especially if you consider the stuff that has popped up over the last 5 years, like the TPB variants. I still feel there has to be some pre-packaged version of the TPB to account for the no-price version. No one has turned up the real source of that book that I know of. I believe Bill (mrwoogieman) was the first board member to come across a bunch.

Anyway, I am in the process of doing some photo cataloging of some stuff. I will be sure to try to get an example of everything I have come across that maybe someone can generate a list from. As a teaser, in case you were wondering the source of that Random House SMB....

Very cool stuff guys

Really enjoying the clean pre-Unity style on these books. Got a few on the way through ebay and planning to dig through the comic shops in Portland. I'll post here if I find any good deals!

Love these books. Perfect cross section for me as an 80s era gamer and a Valiant fan. :)

I've got some Zelda and SMB dupes and SMB SE dupes. Most are mid to high grade I'm fairly picky.

Let me know if you've got a checklist going I can help fill some holes and beat eBay :thumb:

Also don't forget Nintendo Power #25 has a Battle Toads comic that is "by Valiant" although wiki says a Rare employee familiar with the game wrote it...

Fun collectible at any rate. For me at least :)
