You misunderstand. The savvy people who scooped them all up did so at the first hint that the book could possibly be hard to find, and in demand...this was NOT in 1994 when it came out, but in 1999-2000. Therefore, it had nothing to do with people collecting (and hoarding) when that issue came out....that, of course, was the point. No one did.jusdb wrote:im sure that alot of people who collect gi joe now either weren't collecting when 155 came out, or weren't collecting gi joe comics when it came out.
i do not think that a bunch of people bought up several several copies to hoarde for a later date..heres why:
the comic stinks...i think the predominant theory for most people is that ony good comics actually rise in value (however incorrect they may be )
3 3/4" gijoe wasn't really a "collectible" when this issue dropped. im sure there were a few collectors out there in the mid 90s, but not many. also, i understand that 12" joe was, but not 3 3/4". two completely different schools of collectors. kinda like guys who collect cars (as in real, i drive you around, you cost lots of money cars) and guys who collect hot wheels. big diff....same holds true for joe collectors.
i don't think the "last issue" craze was really in full swing then.....
i do think that there are less copies of this readily available than there are collectors seeking it for a few reasons:
it probably had a lower print run than the rest of the series
im sure (due to the content) that alot of copies made their way to the trash
or where returned to vendors for credit by a lot of retails...btw, i know diamond doesn't accept returns, but there are other vendors out there who do.
and im reasonably sure that there are tons of these sitting in quarter bins (w/plenty of pre-unity valiant) or in lesser known comic shops or in someone's attic b/c not alot of people would really think this comic would be "worth" anything. i mean the first issue isn't...why should the last.
i do believe that the prices this issue fetches at auction will decrease. this isn't a good comic (from what ive been told) and there aren't alot of people actually looking for this comic...most gi joe collectors aren't too worried about it. there isn't much it can add to the mythos, so why go pay $$$$ for it.
ok losing train of thought....so ill finish w/that.....
can't believe im getting involved in a discussion like this....
As for low print run, again, that's the point. That's the reason it's hard to find, and the reason (in a roundabout way) why the series was cancelled. No one bought them, they were ordered low, which led to it's cancellation, which led to the last issues being ordered low. Catch-22.
I am not sure, however, that 'a lot' of people who weren't collecting then are collecting now, as I am not sure that any but a small amount ended up in the trash. And, most of the print run of these books is Direct Market editions, which means none of them were returned.
As for 'quarter bins'...that's my entire point. They are NOT in quarter bins, because they've been selling for significant amounts for the better part of 5 years, and I doubt you'd find more than a handful in quarter bins anywhere at this point. There are DEFINITELY not 'tons' of these books in quarter bins, anymore than there are tons of ANY book that sells on eBay for $50+ in them.
Of course, 'last issue-itis' is also a big part of it. If #156 had been the last issue,#155, of course, regardless of print run, wouldn't be worth 'as much'.
I don't think the toys have anything to do with it.
Anyways, hope that helps!

I agree. Locally I've noticed the guys putting together runs of G.I.Joe are toy collectors first and foremost and aren't really comic collectors. They loved the toys and are now getting into the comic and storyline they missed out on.jusdb wrote:i honestly think that the toys do have alot to do with it. i think that the majority of people paying big bucks for this issue collect toys...
eveyone i know looking for a copy does
btw, my main hobby is collecting 3 3/4" gi joes.
I'd like to say that overall Marvel's G.I.Joe run was very memorable and mostly good. To those who think it was a useless marketing vehicle to pump up Hasbro's toyline in the 80s should maybe read it. I was sorry to see it end.

I remeber a GI Joe issue (105?) were some joe's actually died! I think that was the first AND only time that you see commandos take a dirt nap within the series.

While I don't agree that 'most' collectors of GI Joe the comic are collectors of GI Joe the toy, I do agree that GI Joe, written mostly (all?) by Larry Hama, was a lot of fun. Larry was one of the best...heck, one of the ONLY....writers doing 'war' type books in the 80's and 90's....has a real sense for adventure. Not Great, by any means, but solidly entertaining.lobo wrote:

Turok #47 $2.75
XO #68 $2.75
Armorines V2 #4 $3 (I was very surprised to see this one)
Shadowman V3 #2 photo variant cover $3 (Yes! I needed this one for my set!)
Shadowman V3 #2,3,4,5,6 $3 each (6 is very hard to find, I paid $20 for it previously)
Turok Evolution $3
Unity 2000 #1,2 $3
Hardly any Pre-Unitys except for Harbinger 1,2,3 with coupons $3 each!

That was a really nice score Dan. I think the best one there is the Shadowman Vol 3 #2 variant. I had been looking ofr that one myself for a very long time until I found it on ebay.sonicdan wrote:I finally checked out a couple of shops today that are about 70 miles away from where I live.

Those are some sweet pickups Dan. Nobody should walk away from V2 Armorines or the Acclaim Shadowman variants if they see them especially at near or below cover price. Those things are gold! I still need that glow in the dark V2 shadowman #16 AND the elusive V3 Shadowman 6!sonicdan wrote:I finally checked out a couple of shops today that are about 70 miles away from where I live.

and it arrived in very nice shape, thank you very much! I still haven't decided whether I'm going to try to collect all the Acclaim books, but I figured I would pick up some of the harder to find issues, like the Vol. 3 Shadowman issues and others. I was able to find all the issues except #6, so I figured I better get one! I've also picked up a couple copies of the Shadowman Vol. 2 #16 Glow in the Dark and have had a lot of luck finding copies of the Q&W: Magnum Force trade. If I could only find a copy of that Turok: Evolution EB Games variant (and the ever elusive Valiant Voice #19)I have 6 copies of the Shadowman Vol 3 #6. I just sold one on ebay for $20.50

I still need the Shadowman Vol 3 #1 Variants (with & wothout price). I have never seen them offered. I did just get 4 Acclaim Readers. I had been searching for those for a long time as well.Brother J wrote:and it arrived in very nice shape, thank you very much! Do you have a copy of Valiant Heroes Special Preview Edition? There is no cover pick so I don't really know what I am looking for.
