Re: Rai: The History of the Valiant Universe
I think that second cover with the four action scenes was the style of the rejected cover for Rai #0 back-in-the-day.

I wonder whether this will just be a recap of what we already know or whether new events will be described?

Super excited about this. Rai is my favorite character from V1, and I like the throwback to my favorite issue from that run. Hope Rafer does a great job on it.

Also looking forward to Venditti's take on Eternal Warrior. Should be good.

Re: Rai: The History of the Valiant Universe
I'm curious to see how Rafer does writing this. Seems like he has been give a good deal of writing here lately. First he got a full year with A&A, now he has Harbinger Renegade (how long do they have this scheduled for?) and now this one shot of Rai. I am excited for him, as I like his writing style (he can get pretty dark from time to time)

Very excited for this! Will this put to rest the debate around whether or not events predicated in Book of Death happen?

Re: Rai: The History of the Valiant Universe
There's not a scheduled ending in place so far. We know the second story arc starts in July, and I'm assuming that this series should keep running through next year to tie in with the Harbinger Wars 2/Harbinger movie release. Although, they could just as easily end this series after 8 or 12 issues and start up something else psiot related to keep the storyline going till those bigger events come to fruition.TheeBaldMoose wrote:First he got a full year with A&A, now he has Harbinger Renegade (how long do they have this scheduled for?)

Re: Rai: The History of the Valiant Universe
Does anybody else thinks that Rafer Roberts is just average,
Not bad,just average..
After Dysart they could have brought in someone good to write Harbinger..Like Jeff Lemire..,if not great at least better than average..
And they got him to write the throwback to the greatest single issue in Valiant history??
I am sorry, but this feels disappointing..

I think Rafer is very good, but that's just me I guess. I did think it funny you compared his writing to Marvel and then suggested Lemire, who has done most of his work for the last 2 years for Marvel, as an alternativeManaf82 wrote:Does anybody else thinks that Rafer Roberts is just average,

Why isn't this called Rai #0? Missed opportunity IMHO.

2 reasons I can think of:BugsySig wrote:Why isn't this called Rai #0? Missed opportunity IMHO.
- #1 issues sell better (theoretically)
- Maybe they don't want to detract from the original Rai #0, that is revered here so much?

Rai: The History of the Valiant Universe
VEI's stable of talent (writers included) is deep. Matt Kindt, Jeff Lemire, Rafer Roberts, Jody Houser ongoing currently. And soon a new guy on Ninjak. Plus whoever does Valiant High. And as-needed contributions from Peter Milligan, B Clay Moore, Eric Heisserer, Venditti, Van Lente. I suspect that some of these guys take a bit of a pay-cut just for the chance to work with Valiant (Lemire & Kindt at the very least).
I've only been around for a little over a year, but when I met Warren and Dinesh at C2E2, they mentioned how new and unproven writers universally meet with resistance from long-time fans. They referenced Fred Van Lente, whose Archer & Armstrong work was apparently met with howls of disapproval early on.
Mr Roberts has the double challenge of following both Van Lente and Dysart. He is not those guys, and apparently you have not appreciated his work so far. I completely disagree with you, but this is a matter of taste, so no arguments here. Two things I know: Warren Simmons is no fool, and Rafer Roberts is an intensely creative man with a heart of gold. I believe that ultimately those two facts will play out well for VEI.

Re: Rai: The History of the Valiant Universe
well said! I too agree that liking Rafer is a matter of taste. I see his darkness when he writes, the gritty-ness of it all, yet people seem to miss this or glance right over this. Dude has immense talents and is one great guy! I know more people are on the fence than anything regarding him, but he is just barely beginning. I really think/hope this next arch spells it out for people, he's a keeper for ValiantAnarchoMambo wrote: Mr Roberts has the double challenge of following both Van Lente and Dysart. Re: Rai: The History of the Valiant Universe
I kinda wish that they had introduced Rafer to VEI on a new title, even a mini. He's had very big shoes to fill picking up for Dysart and FVL, and there are some people who might not ever accept different writers for those characters. Imagine if Rafer had a chance to really tell his own story from the beginning without dealing with any of that baggage. He might've had a chance to win people over, and would've been more easily accepted on these marquee books...

Very fair assessment. If he had even been the writer for the Gen Zero series, for example, that could have been a good launching pad.Thegreatmagnet wrote:I kinda wish that they had introduced Rafer to VEI on a new title, even a mini. My enthusiasm for Valiant is way down from what it once was, I feel Roberts involvement has damaged the universe.
None of the properties he has worked on are in a better place now than they were before he wrote them. He has raised the bar on nothing.
A&A have been reduced to clown like goof balls and the Renegades are now a bunch of whiny 2 dimensional teen tropes. It's sad.

+1 and count me as one of the people who might never accept different writers for some characters. The Renegades (but mostly Faith) and Archer & Armstrong felt mishandled to me. I have nothing against the gentleman, he seems a cool and good person, but he got screwed when it comes to his career here.BugsySig wrote:Very fair assessment. B. Clay Moore entered with Savage. "No one" has bad will against him: we never heard about Savage before.
That said, Kindt and Lemire picked on previously written characters and made them awesome. Bloodshot and Ninjak never been this good (I'm including VH1 and Acclaim) and Dysart's Livewire was superbly handled in Unity and beyond.

I would disagree slightly. I think Faith has been handled pretty well by Hauser. And the characters Kindt and Lemire picked up had not yet been defined by any writers in VEI.ShadowTuga wrote:+1 and count me as one of the people who might never accept different writers for some characters. Also, many on this board swore they'd never read A&A by anyone other than BWS, but wound up loving FVL's take. If Rafer was that good, people would have taken to it, but they didn't/haven't.

That's kinda where I'm at, too. A&A went too wacky packs, still not sure how I feel about the Renegade.hawkeyeps wrote:None of the properties he has worked on are in a better place now than they were before he wrote them. He has raised the bar on nothing.
