Looking for some high grade marvel bronze issues

Post by tssgery »

I'm interested in getting a number of high grade (graded or raw) bronze age books:

Daredevil 158
Daredevil 168
Hulk 181

Basically, I'm interested in knowing if anyone has any of these books that they would be interested in parting with. I'd be willing to part with some of my Valiants as partial/full trade...

Let me know.

Ugh, I have also been looking on ebay for high grades of Daredevil 168 and Hulk 181. Prices are ultra high at the moment especially with the Electra movie coming out within a few weeks. My suggestion is to look for the book after the movie has been released for some time and let the hype die down a bit. Otherwise your wallet will be hurting.

I've seen the same thing, and I strongly suspect that's what I will need to do with DD 168.

There was a really nice looking raw Hulk 181, the seller claims it would have gotten a 9.4 or so, that was a BIN at $1000... but the seller refused to send me good pictures so I could see the detail... go figure, but I'm probably very happy I resisted the urge to BIN

Good thing you didn't hit that BIN. When something sounds too good to be true, it most likely is. I usually avoid any auction where the seller claims the raw book is a 9.4 or higher when they know they can sell the book 10x more if they submit it themselves. Don't expect to get any NM Hulk 181's raw on ebay as most likely they are either way overgraded or there's something wrong with it like restoration or the marvel stamp has been cut out. Your best bet is to look for a VF or F/VF copy as those are the most legit ones people are willing to sell raw. Yet to date, I still have not came across a copy that fit my price range, except one auction where I was the 2nd highest bidder for a VF+ copy. :!:

I'm hoping the Hulk's will come down in price by next summer but it's such a key book to the age age that I doubt we will really ever find it cheap. I'm also on the look out for a Daredevil #168 but have given up hope on a raw copy so I'm bidding my time on cgc grades between 9.0 and 9.2.

I've debated placing addes in the paper looking for local bronze age collections but so far I've been to lazy to actually do it. :| Perhaps a good idea for you two in your local area! :thumb:

Highly doubt that would work in NYC here. I found more deals on one trip to Virginia then my entire lifetime living here in the city.

well, being from Virginia myself... all I can say is that is must really suck in NYC!

I've scoured most of the comic shops in northern Virginia and found a few deals, but not a lot. There are some pretty good little comic shows every month though... they're good for finding $1 comics.

There are still some deals to be had online if you look hard enough. I just picked up the following books from a private seller's website:

Marvel Spotlight #5 VF/NM 9.0 (it is a nice 9.2 copy) - $100
Iron Man #55 NM- 9.2 (solid 9.4 or possibly better) - $100

These two were testers but I am now going back for more Marvel Bronze Age keys - I lover undergraders! The only problem is that I am torn between slabbing and selling these two comics or keeping them for my collection. :?

WRT the comics you are looking for, try to pick up a DD #168 mid month - the prices should be a bit lower then. I lucked out last year and snagged a 9.4/9.6 copy (near perfect copy) from a local dealer for $30 CDN (~$20 USD at the time).

Cheers,
Skiw

I will let you know when I am done cleaning out what I want. He has a ton of non-key high grade bronze issues as well - most of the books are unread/read once but some have damage due to improper storage :(

Cheers,
Skiw

Couldn't believe I would actually win the book before the movie gets released. Actually I wasn't planning to, but here's the auction which I won. Looking from the past history of completed auctions, this is considered somewhat of a good deal as a CGC 9.0 has consistently been selling for $135 & more.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 6504388560

The best part about this auction was I actually saw the book in person when I visited this guy's store here in Manhattan. He told me he was planning on selling it for $160, but I don't know why he didn't slap a reserve on it. In any case, I wasn't planning to follow up with his auction. For some odd reason, I just happened to catch the auction before it ended while doing a search for a NM raw copy. I can go directly to the store and pick it up to save on shipping which is an added plus.
Feels quite a surprise for me as now I got the book at half of what he was trying to get for it. :D

I've given up ever getting Hulk 181 for a 'good deal'. With the thousands and thousands of copies for sale on eBay every year, I have never found one that didn't sell for close to guide in six+ years.

Ah well.

Holy crap, I just bought something from that seller too. I'm sure he listed it wrong from the way he made it sound. Wonder if the buyer will make him hold onto the agreement and neg him for refusing. LOL

What a bunch of Homers!

The Dallas Stephens stuff is on consignment through Mile High Comics. You'd think those bozos would pay better attention than to list a 9.2 Hulk #181 for a BIN of $149.99!

Yeah, it's been listed 3 times in the last 3 days...

First) A BIN of 149.99
Second) A BIN of 1499.99
Third) a BIN of 1319.99

Make me kind of wonder what the heck he's doing!
