Cliffy's Valiant story

Post by Cliffy »

I first started collecting comics in 1986, right when the New Universe came out. I bought a handful of titles (and followed D.P.7 through the first year and a half), enjoying the concepts more than the execution. Eventually, I lost interest in comics and stopped collecting about 1992.

Flash forward eight years. While waiting for a table at Outback Steakhouse (talk about ignominious!), I wandered into the record store next door. The guy was going out of business. While I didn't see any CD's I liked, he was also selling two or three longboxes worth of comics for 12 cents a pop, including almost full runs of the entire New Universe. I bought 'em all, and that led me to an appreciation of Jim Shooter I hadn't had before.

I think that's when I stumbled on the big interview with him about Valiant on Joe Petrilak's old site, which piqued my interest about the company. Soon thereafter, I found an eBay auction for an entire long box of Valiant books for 25 bucks -- shipping was a bit of a pain, but 300 comics for $50? Heck yeah.

In the box were almost every issue of Unity, plus nearly-full runs (through Chaos Effect) of Shadowman, A&A, Ninjak, Bloodshot, Eternal Warrior, and Harbinger. I was hooked. Over the next year, I nearly doubled my collection with more finds at cons, and I now have almost everything Valiant published up through Birthquake. I've also got some later material, but I never spent much effort searching for it; most of it other than Timewalker isn't my cuppa.

Some people spend their whole lives believing in fairy tales, usually because they don't want to give up the fabulous prizes.
