My story isn't long or especially interesting.

My love of Valiant came before there was a Valiant. I started with Gold Key.

My Grandmother used to give me $5 a week when we went to "TG&Y" in nearby Easley, SC. They had a sample pack of comics put out by Whitman/Gold Key and I'd buy 2 packs a week.

There was a good assortment of books in there and you never knew what you were getting. You'd get Star Trek, The Herculoids and Twilight Zone but you'd also get Tragg & The Sky Gods, Turok, Dinosaur Hunter, Magnus and Solar.

One day I went into my local comic store and saw Magnus : Robot Fighter #1 published by a company I'd never heard of called Valiant. They were awesome...and more importantly they weaved in the stories I remembered as a kid into this new entity. A few months later another old friend Solar : Man of the Atom appeared and I hungrily snapped it up as well.

From there I bought everything they put out for about 3 years. After awhile things started to slow down. I wasn't looking forward to the new issues like I used to...I actually started dreading them. Valiant had lost it's way.

It was only after I discovered the miracle that is eBay that I began to fill in the holes that had developed in my self imposed 10 year Valiant exile.

Now here I stand a mere 4 issues away from a complete run.

It's been a blast, mainly getting to interact with an entire community of fans who are as passionate, or more passionate, then I am about Valiant.

I thought I was alone...I'm glad I was wrong.

Dude they had "TG&Y" on the East Coast :o :thumb:

Wow, Back in in the mid 70's they had them here in San Jose, CA. :thumb:

Mentioning "TG&Y" brought back a bunch of memories.

I think we must have bought a bunch of the Star Wars 3 packs from there. :thumb:

It does for me as well. They closed all of them around here years ago.

Nice story, Cinlach. Goes to prove you don't have to write a novel (like I did) to get your Valiant story across.

I bet you have a pretty nice GK collection, eh?

i used to have a decent bunch of gold key/whitman books but a lot of them were reprints and reprints of reprints.

when i was young and stupid i sold my collection to buy my car since i was determined to not ask my father for any help whatsoever.

that's when all my really good stuff left my possession.

and too many others to name, besides that, thinking about them all makes me sick to my stomach.

my dad would buy comics, read them and stack them in a box when he was done with them. so when i got old enough he gave them all to me.

at one point i had 30 long boxes...probably about half of that was silver age marvel.

i had books that no 10 year old should be allowed to touch, must less own. when i got to be 16 or 17 i wanted a car and made the stupidest decision of my life.

i can never replace those books...sigh. well, that's not true. anything can be replaced...but i can't pony up that kind of cash for them.

I can only say, if that's the "stupidest" thing you did as a teenager, then you are doing well. But, I do feel your pain...

He seems young enough, I bet he'll have at least half of the issues that he cared about back in his collection before he's 40.

Everyone makes mistakes when they are young. You wanted a car and didn't want to ask your dad for help - proving you could be self sufficient - and used the only resource you had at your disposal. I would have done that myself when I was younger, but I didn't have any books worth squat at the time... :D

Thanks for sharing your story.

Dude, it could be worse; at least no one broke in and stole the comics, then you would have been out comics and a car.
