My introduction to Valiant
I have been collecting and more importantly reading comics for over 25 years. Mostly Marvel, but a few years back I got bored of Marvel comics and was looking to start fresh so to speak and I jumped into CrossGen comics. I really enjoyed those books and was really sadden when the company folded. I stopped reading comics for a little bit but got back into them around the time the Civil War event was going on over at Marvel. I started out slow but soon got back into them full force.
Over the last year I have been getting tired of Marvel and their unclear vision of the future of their characters, their constant restarting of their titles and the cancellation of some good books that were not Avengers or X-Men related. Needless to say, my eyes have started to wander again. I never got into DC and I gave up on Image years and years ago, so I tried Valiant a couple weeks ago.
I never read any of their books back in the 90's. I knew nothing about the characters. I did a little research this time before jumping in head first. For me it was a real plus that the books were rebooted and as far as my understanding, to this point they do not follow the previous books.
So I started at the beginning and purchased X-O Manowar Vol. 1 TPB. Let me just say, I was hooked after reading through the first few pages. I have since continued down the line with the TPBs of all titles that have released TPBs to date. I am going in order of when the TPBs were released to try and keep the continuity straight across all titles.
To this point I have read:
- X-O Manowar Vol.1 & 2 (just bought Vol. 3 and started it, it is excellent so far)
- Harbinger Vol. 1 & 2 (my favorite book so far, so well written)
- Bloodshot Vol. 1 & 2 (pretty decent, it has gotten much better toward the end of Vol. 2)
- Archer & Armstrong Vol. 1 (just purchased Vol. 2, have not started it yet)
- Shadowman Vol. 1 (I like it, entertaining so far)
Some of the writers I have not read until their Valiant work, I am sorry it has taken me this long to read their work. Joshua Dysart is one of the best writers I have read in 25 years. The best way for me to describe his writing to me, is chaotic with a smooth flow, he knows how to bring things together in the end. Robert Venditti is another one I am new to, I really enjoy X-O Manowar.
I am looking forward to reading Quantum & Woody, James Asmus has quickly become one of my favorite writers after reading his Gambit run. I also enjoy Greg Pak's past work, I assume his Eternal Warrior is top notch too. I will also try Unity in the near future.
I am debating on staying with the TPBs or switching to the monthly books once I get caught up. So far it is working out great for me, but I will always be a few months behind. I guess I will cross that bridge in a few weeks
So that is my story and I am sticking to it.

Re: My introduction to Valiant
Welcome to the Board! I only collected Batman back in the 90's and thought the Valiant books looked really cool, but I never picked one up to read. Then I stumbled upon the new X-O relaunch and now I am hooked too. I get the monthly titles and I have the first 6 TPB's, but I am seriously thinking about collecting the new HC Collected Editions. X-O is first up and then Harbinger. That may be the way to go.
Enjoy the ride!

Forgive my ignorance. What are the "VEI variants"?comicsyte95 wrote:Welcome!I would recommend reading the regular issues it really makes my week when I get each new issue to read. Are you planning on picking up the VEI variants?
I assume you mean the variant covers to the monthly books? If I switch to the monthly titles I plan on going back and getting the back issues and I will most likely try and get some of the variant covers.

Re: My introduction to Valiant
Yep the Variant covers of the monthly books. Some get hard to find and it starts getting expensive fast but it is fun.Right now its all I collect as im going to try to keep a complete run of all the new Valiant issues. It is a challenge.
When/If you collect them you should post your want list in the Buy/Sell/Trade -Valiant section of the board.

Belated welcome to the board. It's fun here as long as you can avoid the Canadians.
