Valiant: From Father to Son
Yeah, look at that date below my username. I only got into Valiant early last year. Makes sense if you consider that I missed most of the original Valiant run due to not being born yet.
My dad, however, is the real old-school Valiant fan. He had been collecting comics years before collecting comics became the massive thing of the 90s, and he fell in love with the Valiant Universe. In an era where everyone was putting artwork over storytelling, my dad praised Valiant for actually coming up with very interesting and exciting stuff to read, his favorites being Ninjak and Shadowman (the latter of which he had every comic of the vh1 line). Naturally his interest fell off once Acclaim took over, but he always remembered it as a fond memory.
I barely remember how I first found out about it, it's all a blur to me. At some point me and my dad found out about the revival, and with all his stories about Valiant being "the greatest comics he's ever read", I knew I had to learn more. So me and my dad started going through the mountain of comic book boxes in my basement, taking each comic we could find, ordering them, and then prowling the Internet for ones we missed. And as we collected, I read, and to quote a post on another forum, I plowed through it like a McDonald's Happy Meal. I literally couldn't stop myself, it was just so good. In a matter of months I had obtained and read through everything up to Birthquake. I was more than ready for the revival, and when it came I was blown away.
I named this little story as such because I see it as a passing of the torch. As my dad fell in love with the old Valiant I have grown fond of the new. Like my dad I am trying to grab everything Valiant has to offer, building a complete collection that can stand the test of time.

Welcome ! Great story ! Unfortunately, though I have instilled in my 15 year old daughter to read all sorts of comics, she really has never been much of a fan of the superhero genre. I got her read the the new Harbinger TPB, which she did say is well written, she still was not really interested.
Enjoy !
Enjoy !

Great story! Both of my daughters are comic fans, though they seem to favor Marvel and DC at the moment. I'm sure that will change as they grow and mature into intelligent people.

Re: Valiant: From Father to Son
...Oh. Okay. The forum topic link doesn't light back up when there's a new post. Not gonna lie, that kinda sucks.
DC post-reboot, on the other hand, is inexcusable.
Curious, how old is the average poster 'round here? Because I feel like I'm going to be the "little kid" of the group, going on about his TV Tropes and Shonen Jumps while all you guys just stare at me.
Nah, Marvel's been doing pretty good so far. Comics are all friendly for jumping-on, and the movies been doing a great job turn B-listers into household names. No shame there.DirtbagSailor wrote:Great story! Both of my daughters are comic fans, though they seem to favor Marvel and DC at the moment. No idea about an average age. I'm just guessing but i'd say the majority are 25+ but there are some other younger members.Watchtower wrote:

Re: Valiant: From Father to Son
I think a large number of us started with Valiant when we first were introduced to comics (around 11 for me - which makes me 32 now). I pay attention to things that date people and we do have a very wide spread. I think late twenties/early thirties is one peak, and mid-40s to 50 is another. There are plenty who are in their teens, though.

Re: Valiant: From Father to Son
Welcome to the boards, It is really good to hear how Valiant has passed down from father to son. Is your dad loving the new Valiant as well?
Don't worry about age (well I have to say that as I'm 50) I think this board is more concerned about the stories than the age of the readers anyhow
Both my sons love reading comics, my daughter doesn't but hey we are all different, and all three of them have grown up thinking comics are natural reading material to have around.
I think it is really good when I hear stories such as yours, sounds like you had fun in the basement sorting through the old issues, it is always great especially when you find an issue you can't remember owning.
I hope you enjoy your stay
