BugsySig's 1,000th Post!
1,000 posts since March...not too shabby. I've been meaning to get my story down for a while so this seemed like the perfect time to do so. Now, where to begin...
On another thread I outlined the first time I ever walked into that fabulous temple of dreams known as. Comic Book Store. I was 12 and, prior to that day, my only manner of acquiring comic books was at the local 7/11, or other similar corner store, and the quarter bin at he used book store. I happened accross the store by accident while out one day with my father--a comic book fan in his own right who never quite recovered from his mother throwing away all his original Silver Age Marvel comics when he went into the navy in '63. that day I purchased two Marvel classic reprints: Uncanny X-Men #1 and Giant-Sized X-Men #1 (X-Men, of course being the coolest thing ever to a 12 year old in 1992).
From that day forward I would beg my parents to take me back every weekend. Eventually they tired of the 40 minute drive and found me a store about 10 minutes away--Barbarian Books in Wheaton, MD. It was so packed with books, comics, magazines, toys, games, etc that it was basically one hallway between two mountains of geekdom. It was there one day, while checking out that I first noticed a book called "Rai" up at the front counter. I thought the covers were really cool (espescially that Gold one ) but figured it was some Manga comic I wouldn't like
About a month later I was at Barbarian again, and when checking out this time (probably with a handful of Image comics of which i was obsessed) the guy at the counter gave me a free comic. "Cool," I figured, a free comic...and, oh, there's that Japanese guy on the cover.
A week later I was looking for every comic with a cool blue border and the word "Unity" at the top. I was hooked. So along with the Savage Dragon fetish i had developed was a new addiction. A few months later I was searching stores for a "black" Solar #10. I remember my Dad coming home one day with Shadowman #16 asking me if that was the one I was looking for--you know, the one with the "first appearance" of Doctor Mirage. I gave my best friend my extra copy of Bloodshot #1 for his 13th birthday. My signed Bloodshot #s 6 & 7 were my prized possessions.
Then came the dark days...Acclaim...an the end of VALIANT. It also happened to coincide with getting my drivers license, going out with girls, etc, etc, so I don't think I felt the loss for several years. After college I was stuck in a crappy cubicle job for a few years and spent a LOT of time surfing the internet. I remember coming accross the initial stories when the Valiant library and catalogue were up for auction, the sale, the lawsuits...then nothing.
So from time to time I would get nostalgic and start googling various VALIANT characters and titles, even perusing this site a few times. Then, one day, I go to the CBR website and right there staring back at me is XO Manowar. Then the "Summer of Valiant" announcements started coming and I just had to talk about it with someone other than my wife, who just rolls her eyes in that "here he goes again about something geeky" sort of way some of you may be familiar with. So I registered for the boards and the rest, as they say, is history.
So I would like to take this chance to thank everyone on the boards for making me feel welcome here from the beginning (even when I spoiled Gilad's appearance in XO #1 for Heath) and to also thank Greg and the other good-ol-boys for starting this site and keeping the VALIANT torch burning for all those years. Here's to the next 1000 posts!

Everyone has their "what was more important" moment when writing off the Acclaim years. I think it's more about the suckiness of Acclaim than the thing that distracted you.BugsySig wrote:Then came the dark days...Acclaim...an the end of VALIANT. Yes - except the other way. I'm with the thing that distracted me part. Ah.... Pursuit. Nice to be able to have a couple of pursuits now!jmatt wrote:Everyone has their "what was more important" moment when writing off the Acclaim years. If I win an argument, it doesn't mean I'm right. It means I'm a better arguer.
In addition, I'm right.
