Comics 4 Life

Post by Helwen »

I think my dad got me interested in comics but never realized it and I didn't realize at the moments sitting at our local town barber shop looking through early '70's cheap comics that I liked them. I was around five back in '73ish and I remember looking at comic books back in the magazine rack at our town grocery store while my mom shopped. My first comic I bought was Marvel Team-Up Spider-man & Nighthawk #33 it's the only one I could find once I discovered years later what type of nerd was living inside of me. In high school I started buying a few comics but never was serious about them until '84 when I first bought Marvel Alpha Flight Vol. 1 #12 and that's when comics became my life on-going hobby. Why did I choose Valiant comics? My comic book friends were buying mostly Marvel and DC. I kept bouncing around searching for something better I discovered Malibu comics then Image as I drifted away from Marvel and DC titles all of a sudden our local comic store featured Valiant comics. That's when I dropped everything and bought only titles from Valiant. Personally what I buy are comics that are worth the bang for the buck and early Valiant comics were at the top of my list (and returning).

Welcome aboard, fellow Alphan! :D

#12 is a great place to commit to being a comic nerd - smack in the middle of John Byrnes run. I'm a huge fan of JB's stuff.

jmatt, you should consider getting all the JB issues of Alpha Flight to start, and also the ones that Jim Lee drew... Two high points of the first series, IMHO.
I like to draw stuff... http://grendeljd.deviantart.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

My wife likes to draw stuff too, and she is better than me! [I'm very proud of her]... https://www.facebook.com/pages/Sara-Dec ... ref=stream" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

If I win an argument, it doesn't mean I'm right. It means I'm a better arguer.

In addition, I'm right.

Thanks for the advice. I had comic reading frat brothers way back when, and I remember them being big on Alpha Flight. Was Byrne the writer for the initial kickoff? Or later in the run?

Byrne wrote/drew the first 28 issues. Great stuff if you're a Byrne fan.

Jim Lee drew 51,53, 55-62 & 64 - I believe these were his first professional works in comics. I particularly like 56-60.

Mike Mignola also did some really great covers from 29-34 [+36 & 39] too. I could swear he did the interiors for a few of those too, but I'd have to dig 'em up to be sure.

I'm just glad it was pretty good, long and drawn out. (that's what she said.)
