My Valiant Story and basic introduction
This is my first post on the board, so forgive any offenses against board etiquette that may follow. I'll get the hang of things eventually.
My name is Josh and I began collecting comics in general in the early 90s (probably 1992 or so) because my friends were into them. I started like most at the time with Image comics and the Death of Superman stuff that my friends enjoyed, but other than Spawn I just couldn't get into any of the stories. Then I discovered Solar and XO Manowar, and I was floored. I loved the characters and the stories. Unfortunately, I came in after Unity like most and didn't know what had come before. I found myself in the same boat as many and could not find or afford the pre-unity issues to catch up. I did pick up everything new that came out (I loved Shadowman and Dr. Mirage). I even ended up naming my dog Solar. So you could say I was a pretty big fan.
I still had a hard time reading those early stories because I couldn't afford/find them. I had purchased an extremely large lot of assorted comics that was advertised in a "trade and sell" circular that contained no Valiants and ranged from crap to gems. However, I had a friend whose parents gave in and gave him whatever purchase he desired, and who as a result, had several rare and expensive comics, including many early and rare Valiants. One night we stayed up hashing out a trade of many of my crappy and some good comics from that lot for all of his Valiants (including the blue variant TPBs of Harbinger and XO). I still didn't have a lot of the pre-unity however, but I eventually fell out of comics (except Vertigo stuff - mostly Sandman) and they all went bagged into the closet, then the attic of my house when I moved out on my own (getting married as well), then in a moving truck to my new home's garage, where I rediscovered them while unpacking last week. I became remotivated to finish the mostly unread stories (because I can't stand to start in the middle). I figured I could complete my collection and jump into them in release order now that I have more money since my comic collecting teen years 15 years ago (man, that makes me feel old) and the comics fetch less now. However, I was surprised I wasn't the only one that was still interested in collecting Valiant. I'm hoping that through the board here and on eBay I can complete my collection without spending a fortune, especially since I now have a son on the way (with whom I would love to share my comics eventually). I'll be going through all of my issues to find my deficiencies and will see if anyone can help fill the gaps. Otherwise, I'm going to have to read downloaded scans (which I hope aren't frowned upon as I definitely prefer to read and own the real deal).
Until then, I'll being reading the board (and occasionally contributing- I tend to lurk mostly).
