My turn
Starting collecting comics when I was 12 in 1987. My older brother gave me my first 3 books, Amazing Spider Man 293,294 and 298. For the most part after that I was pretty much a "make mine Marvel" collector. None of the Independents appealed to me and DC was seemed, at the time, like a lil girls comic book. Once in a while though, I picked up a Firestorm or a Dark Horse book that looked cool.
My cousin actual turned me on to Valiant shortly after it launched but I got into it too late to be able to afford all the back issues. I remember there was a contest Valiant had as far as advertising them and such. My other brother was a printer so I came up with the idea of desinging a cool bumper sticker. I forget what it said but I had the V logo with Solar across the background. It was actually really cool and looked authentic. He made about 200 of them and I gave most of them to the owner of the comic store and he was supposed to take pics and enter me into the contest. Dunno whatever came of it but I regret I never saved at least one
Anyways, just around 2000-01, I had about 10k comics in my collection and managed to get a majority of all the valiant books up to '96. I came across financial troubles and had to unload all of my books and fast. I sold'em for about 10% of book value. After that, I kinda gave up collecting, even when there were no longer money issues. Mostly out of frustration that I lost so much money and effort.
Now here I am and I can thank my 9 year old boy for getting me back to collecting.
