Hello!
Greetings,
I'm an old school Valiant reader. I got interested around Magnus 3 or 4 when the owner of the LCS in Eau Claire, WI where I worked at started raving about the series. I'd never paid much attention to Shooter nor Magnus writing one off as an egomaniac and the other as a dated concept. I was, of course, wrong and I became quite wrapped up in some of the best Superhero comics written.
By the time Unity came out, Valiant books were my absolute favorites on the market and I had the whole run. After Shooter left my interest faded and I kept buying many books but stopped reading most of them (I lived at home and got a deep discount so I bought a whole lot of comics back in those days).
I followed Defiant, even going to company launch party at the San Diego comic con (that was the first place I ever got a drink from a bartender - a rum and coke) and I ate a piece of Defiant cake and got a signed Warriors of Plasm 1. I also hung out with a few of the Valiant Knobs at a retailer portion of the Chicago comicon, though I can't remember who - it was a long time ago. They were very nice people and I was thrilled that one wore a NIN shirt and liked industrial music.
Shortly thereafter I moved across country and quit buying comics for a year and a half or so. When I got back in I found out Defiant was dead but Broadway had appeared. I bought all the Broadway books and was actually more impressed by the whole line than I was with Defiant (Plasm and Dark Dimension were great, the rest never took for me). Of course we all know how Broadway went down.
Over the years all my comics have been sold. About two and a half years ago I picked up Conan in a grocery store and started buying a few books again, mostly DC and Dark Horse. Well, once I saw the ad for the new Harbinger HC I started thinking back to those glory days and got all misty eyed over Valiant. I've ordered the HC and have also started a scouring of the LCSes in the area for discount Valiant, Defiant, Broadway and Future Comics (interesting to see Layton w/o Shooter's background work). So far I've gotten about a hundred and I'm really enjoying reading some of the stories from after I stopped reading Valiant. I got 20 some issues of Bloodshot and I think the art is consistantly good and the writing is quite strong. It's almost a mob book, almost a spy book, almost a Rai book but not really quite any of these things. Cool.
I've read a few parts of the Chaos Effect and liked what I read better than I expected to. What's the general feeling about these stories? I hope to search down more but don't plan on paying more than a dollar for any of them and see how far that gets me.
Also, I was pleased to see a letter I'd written to the Powers that Be many years ago printed. I'd totally forgotten I'd written it. I think I also had one printed in the Peyer VH2 Magnus title - I kind of liked that book back then.
OK, well I've babbled enough. I've been lurking the last week or so and thought I'd share my story.
Here's hoping for more from Shooter and more from Valiant!

Rock on! I wish Valiant proper had had more letters columns. It's odd they didn't as Shooter seems to like those. I remember reading a really old Spider-man comic and seeing a letter from Jim SHooter in it! Anyone know if that was written before he wrote Legion? If so, it was probably his first published comics work!betterthanezra wrote:Welcome to the boards and I also had a letter printed in VH-2 Magnus

Looks like he's seeking to be the next Hobo apprentice as well....jedimarley wrote:Oh no. A 'Golden Gopher'.frater f wrote:I haven't been a cheesehead for 15 years now.
