my WORST valiant story

Post by Blood of Heroes »

The worst day of my life happened at the San Diego Comic Con about 1994(or some time before the Chaos Effect). Valiant was in it's prime, and had a huge booth at which they held signings and all sorts of crap. The main thing they were doing was holding trivia contests every twenty minutes or so, and for each correct answer they gave you a pack of promotional trading cards. These packs were to be used as currency at an auction that was to be held on Sunday. Having a four day pass, I never strayed too far from the booth, amassing as many packs of cards as I could. They had posted a list of what was to be auctioned off. The list included rare books, original artwork, paraphernalia, etc. But what I wanted most, was to win the auction to be drawn into an upcoming comic book as some background character. I would live forever in the pages of Harbinger, or dare I say, Bloodshot! Well, the day came and I had quite a few packs of these cards. The auction number came about and I found myself in a bidding war with several other people. Then there was two- me and one other. When the smoke cleared, I found myself short about five packs of cards. I had lost. In my despair, I settled on the next auction for a complete set of Gold Books. Not too shabby, right? At least I wasn't walking away empty handed. As I started to leave the room, Gold Books in hand, I heard them announce that since the 'get drawn into a book auction' was such a big hit they were going to do another. The second one didn't come close to what the first one had gone for, but since I had spent all my 'money' on the Gold Books, I didn't have a chance. Aint life a b!tch?

Just thought I'd share this story with like minded people.

Wow, cool story, bummer of an out come, but a complete run of gold books, not to shabby.

BTW, what golds did you get?

Nice score on the gold books, most of them were going for a pretty penny back then.

I had a gold A&A that was given to me by a VALIANT employee (a friend of a friend), :thumb:

But I traded it for store credit at a local comic shop, to get a bunch of "comons" (I was a poor college student at the time) but I did get a Solar #10, which was the only book I got that wasn't cover price.

In hindsight, I would soooooooo much rather have the A&A gold, but at the time I was out of money so, I had no other way to get the books I wanted.

The follies of youth.

Back in the day, I was not interested in the golds at all (mainly because of the money they wanted for them). After the crash though, I scooped 'em all up......

The Gold Books that I got were: A&A 0, Armorines 0, Bloodshot 0, both Eternal Warrior 1's, H.A.R.D. Corps 1, Magnus 21, Ninjak 1, Rai 9, Dr. Mirage 1, Shadowman 0, Turok 1, Unity 0, X-O 0, X-0 1/2. Jesus!, now that I've typed them all out I don't know what I was upset about. I've still got most of these, but I did give a friend a couple for contributing to the 'currency' I used at the auction. I think I'd still rather me immortalized in print.

That's so much better than the other prize!

no, it was a huge eucalyptus that fell due to heavy rains and wind(in San Diego no less) and demolished their detached garage. If they went on ebay I'd have had a chance of getting them.[/quote]

If I remember correctly your competition is a member here. I think he posted he was not shown very prominently in the comic. Cool story. I went to the '95 con, it was nice, but no spectacular Valiant activity like that.

Oh, long stretch of memory here. I'd say Harbinger 38, pages 13 & 14.

Seems a bit late though.
