My Valiant Story
Hi!
I'm new to this board (first post) so I'll start by introducing myself.
My name is Tim, I'm 28 years old. I work retail, but am also a musician. I play singer / songwriter stuff, 30's - 40's swing, and mellow psychedelia.
I enjoy Star Trek, Doctor Who, music and comics, but my main hobby is playing with my 2-year-old daughter. Occasionally I enjoy playing with my wife, also.
----------
My Valiant story...
I started collecting comics when I was around 13 years old. The first comic I bought was Silver Surfer #56 and I became obsessed with comics. I grew up in a fairly rural area, and I didn't know where any comics stores were in my area, so I mostly bought from newsstands. When Wizard first started coming out on magazine racks I always picked it up and was amazed at all the comics out there that I had no idea existed. I read an article on the Unity series and immediately HAD to go get some.
My good friend, and comic collecting buddy, Bart and I went to his local comics shop in Danville and I picked up a copy of Solar: Man of the Atom #13. I was hooked on Valiant from then on. The colors were so bright and the stories were just what I was looking for in comics... stories that were exciting, different, and most of all didn't insult my intelligence. Most (but not all) of the Marvels and DC's I was reading didn't come anywhere close to the quality of these Valiants I had become interested in.
But alas, I was 13 and really didn't have a lot of money, so I wasn't able to buy all the Valiants I wanted. With a comics budget of probably less than $20 a month, $2.50 was a sizable chunk of my comics allowance, but I did manage to amass an impressive collection on X-O Manowar and Shadowman issues.
A few years later, when the price of Valiant back issues took a serious nosedive (and I got a job) I managed to find all sorts of great things in bargain bins and flea markets. I bought a copy of Magnus #1 for $5.00, Solar #1-10 for $30 and a complete run of H.A.R.D Corps for about $10. The dealers were happy to get rid of these books at the time, and I was thrilled to get them.
Now I have about 60+ Valiant Comics and am in the process of aquiring more more more! Glad to know this board exists and people still love Valiant!

Now you can legally buy those hear in NC. Are you a fighting Phoenix?Tim Petty wrote:Tar Heel all the way. I went to highschool in Yanceyville, and that was about 15-20 minutes from Danville, VA. After school we'd cross the border and buy comics and scratch-offs (which we weren't legally allowed to buy)

No, I was a Fighting....um...whatever they call people who go to community college. I did live about a block from Elon's campus at one point. Was kind of nice, but sometimes sucked at the same time. There were always parties going on and that was fun if I was off work the next day, but on days when I had to wake up the next morning at 4:30am to go to work, the parties were sort of annoying.
On the bright side, now, thanks to the parties downstairs (and living almost right on the railroad track) I can now officially sleep through anything.
