My first CGC submission... Please shed light on the process

Post by Juki »

I sent in some comics to CGC for grading a few weeks ago. The comics were on 3 different invoices. When I just logged into CGC and clicked on "view status" of my submission there are 3 different invoice numbers. Next to each invoice.... One invoice says "scheduled for grading," the next invoice says "received," and the 3rd invoice says "verified."

Does "received" mean the comics are not scheduled to grade yet?

Does "verified" mean they have been graded?

What can I expect as they are completed? Does CGC email the grades to you before they are "slabbed?"... Or do they just mail the comics back to you (and you physically look to see the grading)?

Does CGC e-mail you any information during the process?

Thanks for any comments !

Congrats and good luck! Received means they have the books. Verified means they have confirmed that the books in your invoice matches the books they have on hand. Scheduled for grading means they are sitting in a queue, and will likely be there for some time. Graded means they have allegedly been graded, and at some point they will move to quality control where you hope they put on the correct label. The grades won't be posted until they actually ship. I've waited as little as 2 months to 4.5. They are not fast!

Ok...thanks nycjadie. That helps. Does CGC contact you by email at anytime? When you say "The grades won't be posted until they actually ship." Does that mean they post the grades to your "submission" tab in your CGC account? Or do they email the grades to you?

Thanks!

The only thing you will get from them is an email stating that your package is being shipped.

This is what was on "my submission" page. It says the comics were graded...but there are no grades. It does list inventory of the comics. I wonder if they will eventually post the grades.

It will then go through "Quality Control" and then "Shipped." Once it's marked Shipped, your grades will be posted, usually just before they send you the email confirmation. Takes forever!

That is one hell of a submission! Hope they all come back 9.8's, unfortunately I know all to well that probably won't happen. :!:

Good Luck and keep us posted as to what the grade out as.

Yes, good luck with the grades! Nice submission. I did one at NYC Comic Con on Oct 4 and am waiting with bated breath. Their site says one month turnaround but I've had wait times much longer than that in the past. My status is just Verified at the moment. :|

Thanks guys... I've never submitted before. But, I know they won't all grade perfect. Some of the VH1 comics had some wear. The X-O #29 isn't perfect (I submitted because of cover cutting error, so it will probably get a green label).

I'll go ahead and post the 2nd page of my submission for viewing and post results.

Wow, even more! It's gonna be like Christmas when that package arrives. :)

Apparently, I'm not far behind you -- mine have been bumped up to "Scheduled for Grading".

Yeah...it would be nice if my 1992 Harby #1 came back with a high grade (I submitted two...but one of them will not score high...). One of these seemed to be in very nice condition to me (but I am no grader).

One of my four invoices is now marked as graded. 25 copies of X-O #1 and Divinity 1:20 and 1:40. Two others are all X-O #1 and the last is some Marvel SA stuff.

Ok...CGC did post my grades before getting the comics back. I'll start with the first list which was pretty bad. Most of my grades were worse than I would have guessed.

The above grades leave some to be desired. Chalk it up to a learning experience (I need to do better...ha,ha) Of the worse grades here are the notes:

1) X-O 9.0 slight spine stress to cover. Small, multiple bend right top of front cover
4) X-O 9.0 multiple bend top of front cover

My thoughts here are why does the second X-O score as low as the one with stress in addition to a "bend"? Maybe it had more of a bend.

5) X-O 9.4 spine split

I would think a spine slit would be worse this a multiple bend. Yet, this comic scored higher

6) EW #4 9.4 light spine stress lines to cover. Small bend bottom right cover

7) Solar3 9.4 small bend left center of back cover

8) Solar3 9.4 small crunch right bottom of back cover, very light spine stress lines to cover

9) Harbinger 1 (1992)
foreign substance bottom of back cover
indent bottom of back cover
light bends to cover
light spine stress lines to cover
tear spine

10) Harbinger 1 (1992) heavy tear left center of cover
small split spine

11) A and A gold 0 9.4
light spine stress lines to cover
small bend right bottom of cover

13) Harbinger 1 QR variant
bend left bottom of front cover
bend left top of back cover
light spine stress lines to cover
multiple indent left center of back cover

14) Harbinger 1 QR Variant
light bends to cover
light spine stress lines to cover
multiple indent left center of back cover

15) X-O 1 QR Variant
light bends to cover
light spine stress lines to cover
stain full top of back cover

16) Pink Habinger 0 8.5
indent right bottom of front cover
smudge left center of front cover

I have to say I was disappointed with 8.5 grade on this one. There was a very tiny smudge. Not much at all. Looked beautiful to my eye.

17) X-O #29 8.0 with error cut cover showing PDF bar across the top of cover indent right bottom of front cover
light bends to cover

Most disappointed in this 8.0 grade. This error cut comic looked fantastic. There was a light bed on bottom left. No color breaks. No coroner dings. Could they have lowered the grade because of the mis-cut cover? That sucks.... No way this comic should have rated this low. Awsome condition with probably a pretty rare mis-cutting of the cover.

19) Harbinger 1 Braithwaite 9.4
multiple indent left center of back cover
very light spine stress lines to cover

20) Harbinger 1 Braithwaite 9.4
multiple indent left center of back cover

21) Harbinger 1 Braithwaite 9.4
multiple indent left center of back cover

22) Harbinger 1 gold
bend right bottom of back cover
multiple crease right top of back cover

23) Harbinger 2 8.5
bend bottom of front cover
light spine stress lines to cover
multiple bend center of front cover

This is another mystery grade to me. I would have thought much higher grade than 8.5

24) Harbinger 3 zircher 9.6
Light bends to cover

This comic was the best of the bunch. Absolutely flawless. Perfect corners, no wear, absolutely beautiful. The cover of the comic had a slight arch when laid flat (very slight). Of all the comics that I submitted I thought this one was a sure 9.8 with a chance to go higher. I guess I should have had it pressed...just so it could lay a little flatter.

25) X-O QR 9.0
Light bends to cover
small bend left top of front cover
very light spine stress lines to cover

It is like "The Tale of Two Cities." 16 comics rated 9.8 out of the second list. Crazy... I'm sure someone else graded these.

Graders notes on worst scores on second list:

2) Harbinger Wars 1 9.6
Scuff cover, spine stress lines spine

6) Harbinger Wars 3 9.4
Dent front cover

7) Harbinger Wars 4 9.6
Spine stress lines spine

8) Divinity 1 9.4
Bend right bottom of back cover

14) Shadowman 1 9.6
Bend top of back cover

15) A and A 1 9.4
Spine stress lines spine

Yeah... This batch was graded easier

Well done on the HW books. Those are hard in 9.8.

I highly recommend a pre-screen for newbies. You learn a lot. My first submissions were about 50% 9.8, but I did a pre-screen, so I didn't have to pay for the lower grades beyond the pre-screen fee. Now, some of my submissions are 100% 9.8 (which suggests I'm too conservative), but usually I get 22-23 of 25.

I'm still learning every day - what books make sense to have pressed, how to correct some defects myself, presentation of the books for submission, etc.

I want that guy!

I was going to ask if you requested a pre-screen, I figured you did. Still, in all, you've got some pretty great books there.

Coming up with 9.8s is tough. I bought some of the VEI slabs in 2012 from a board member who was allowed to examine the books right out of the Diamond box when they arrived at his LCS. That way they were never touched by store employees or customers.
