Latest CGC Grades

Post by nycjadie »

Looks like I'm getting a bundle of books in the mail. Grades were posted today. I'm not thrilled about all the grades, and i'm super *SQUEE* that they ignored my prescreen requests. I'm getting back some 9.6s, and a 9.4 that I never would have wanted (i.e. commons). We will have some words when I get the packages. Some highlights I'm excited about are below. Some of these books will be for sale.

Cheesasaurus Rex - 7.0, 8.0, 9.0

Nintendo Comics System 2 Variant Cover (the rare yellow one) - 9.6

Super Mario Bros NN Random House Cassette Book - 7.0

Nintendo Comics System Sneak Preview - 6.5

4 Archer 0 Golds - 9.6, 9.4, 8.5, 7.5 (really surprised at the 9.6 - these were Craigslist finds)

Acclaim Adventure Zone - 9.8

Acclaim Reader - 9.8

Turok Evolution EB Games - 9.0

Savage 1 Retailer - 9.8

Death Defying Doctor Mirage SDCC Convention - 9.4

FCBD Valiant 25th Anniversary Tommy Edwards Cover - 8.0 (the Ultimate Comics no sticker version - only 100 copies)

X-O 15 Kotaki Error Book - 9.2, 9.4

Silver Surfer 44 - 8.5

New Mutants 1 - 9.4, 9.6 (not bad from the dollar bin)

Bubbleicious Insert Books - Power Man/Iron Fist 98 - 9.6!, Spectacular Spiderman 83 8.5, Cloak and Dagger 1 - 9.2, Avengers 236 - 9.6!, Rom 47 7.5 (also a very rare book)

Not sure yet. I'll report back when I have them. Should be blue label. I'll be selling the 9.2.

Another set just posted.

Britannia 1 & 2 Johnson 9.8

My prescreens were very successful. 80-100% 9.8s. This is in contrast with my last submission about 9 months ago which came in 50% on some invoices. I think one was less. I don't think I'm as inconsistent, but you never know. Maybe it was 2 points of failure - harsher grading and I was too sloppy.

I've got numerous commons on the way that I've been saving up for a year now. I'll have a few extras, and will post them for sale, as always.

I just got my books back from Rose City, quite pleased with my results.

Faith Mini Gold = 9.4
Faith ongoing Gold = 9.8
Faith SSalefish #1 = 9.8
Adventures of A&A = 9.8
Ninjak #1 1:60 = 9.6
Divinity II 1:80 = 9.8

Was real shocked by the 9.4, seriously thought I had a solid book there. Uber pleased with the Ongoing Gold, as it is a first signed copy. Pleased with the Ninjak, as it was previously slabbed at a 9.4. I cracked it, had it signed, pressed, reslabbed...pleased! Divinity III I was a little worried about, but glad it popped at the 9.8!

Now I've got the bug, and I'll be SS Slabbing a bunch! Think I will have about 20 for ECCC this year!

I saw these on FB. Amazing! I haven't gone the SS route, but there I have several. I feel like if I went down that road, it's a slippery slope. The Faith first signed 9.8 is the bomb!

I'm a bit surprised you sent some of those books off for grading, against what is typically very good results you have some low grades, Steve? A 7.5 A&A gold?

Yeah, I could see how that looks. These are a handful of special books that I was setting aside. The Archer golds are purely for flipping. Raws were near $100 a year ago, but they've dipped down a bit now. The 7.5 was a disappointment, but not completely unsurprising - it has a small tear. I think when the Bat in the Sun series comes out later this year, we're going to see renewed interest, and a 9.6 will be a $300 book again.

The Cheesasaurus and Adventures of the O books were also surprising. They all generally appeared to be in the same condition. I sent them off for a clean and press. They were not mint by any means. It seems there were a few things that kept them from grading well. Anyway, I got what I wanted out of it - a high grade copy. However, the fact that they ranged from 6-9 is pretty perplexing.

The remainder are just rare books that I am generally happy to have in any grade. I see these books and I nearly always pick them up - even in poor condition. Plus, these are now the highest graded in the census:

Nintendo Comics System 2 Variant Cover (the rare yellow one) - 9.6
Super Mario Bros NN Random House Cassette Book - 7.0
Acclaim Adventure Zone - 9.8
Acclaim Reader - 9.8
Savage 1 Retailer - 9.8
Death Defying Doctor Mirage SDCC Convention - 9.4
Adventures of the O – 9.0
4001 Japanese – 9.8
Bloodshot Reborn 15 Lemire – 9.8
Faith 3 Keep a Breast Con Edition – 9.4
Bloodshot USA 1 Con Edition – 9.8

Congrats on the Pre-Hero comics.

Regarding Cheesasaurus Rex, I am guessing that your graded copies are of issue #1. I haven't seen many copies of issue #2 over the years. Have you seen many copies of #2 in your search?

Is that the "Sharp Tangy" book? If so, I've only encountered 1 copy and it's probably VG. Needs a good clean;) I've never seen the foreign versions.

Super fast shipping. I received a box of these today. However, it appears to me that these books have not been pressed as requested. This is curious, as my DMG books are sitting there in a queue to be pressed, which they separated out into a separate invoice given the insurance price I put on them. I can't be more frustrated right now, as you cannot bring up old invoices once they are submitted in the new system, and they don't email you them. I swear to god the service at CGC is deplorable, truly. I've had a near monthly *SQUEE* up from them since I began using them.

I will have words with them tomorrow.

In any event, I'm surprised that some of these books came out 9.8 and 9.6. Hopefully, we will get some clarity tomorrow.

I know nobody care about my CGC travails, but thanks for letting me vent!

I called CGC, and sure enough, they botched (1) my press requests, (2) my prescreen requests, and (3) failed to advise about moving invoices from 30 to 25 books, thereby creating additional costs.

They are making it right, but I'll have to wait for them all to arrive, and then send them all back. I guess the only saving grace is that I might not have to pay for the few prescreen fees I might have and the press fees for the 9.8s that I already received. We shall see. The managers are out of town, so I won't know for sure.

I am very pleased that pressings are likely to increase my grades. It explains the divergence in grading on those Kraft books as well. Super shocked that I got 9.6 without a press on a Archer gold and the 1983 book. I mean, the Avengers book wasn't even boarded and was stored in a wine box;) Hilarious!

UPDATE - After spending a few hours sorting through 6 invoices that were royally screwed up, CGC has made its best attempts to fix everything. It does not help that each invoice had different instructions. We still have some disagreement, as CGC said I did not indicate having a minimum prescreen request on some of these (which I recall submitting in the drop down box on the new form). In any event, to make a very long story short:

-They are returning 9 9.6 slabs that I don't really want (approx $140 in fees incurred).
-They are pressing and regrading 32 books at no charge (approx $384 in fees).
-They are reimbursing $204 in shipping charges.

The net-net:
-I figure I'm getting about $244 in free pressing after accounting for the prescreen bungle.
-I get to compare the grades I received before pressing was done, and then again afterward. I'm actually very excited about this, and will find it invaluable to compare the benefits of pressing with actual before/after grades performed by CGC. Once this is done, I'll share with the boards, because I think it will be extremely valuable (especially for me, as I'm pretty familiar with the defects and look of the books as slabbed).
-I also wasted several hours sorting, figuring out issues, unpacking, repacking, posting, cataloging, etc.

Looks like your books have been removed from the CGC Census in the past week. Negative red numbers are unusual, but your situation makes sense.
