Re: Beckett acquires CBCS
I've got to imagine having someone like Becket backing you in this business is a solid move. They've been doing these types of things for quite some time. I still remember all the Becket Monthly's I had as a young kid/teen to evaluate my baseball/football card collection!

If nothing else, at least Beckett can help CBCS figure out how to make a good-looking label.

Re: Beckett acquires CBCS
It's funny to me because Beckett was very late to the sportscard grading industry, but once they arrived, they essentially became "the best".
I don't think CBCS will automatically become "the best" as a result of Beckett getting involved, primarily because Beckett isn't a comic industry giant (like they were for sportscards), and also because they're probably 3,000,000 slabs behind CGC in terms of product existing.
But... if there was any doubt about the legitimacy of CBCS (which is weird, since Steve Borock founded CBCS and founded CGC... so it's the same guy... but whatever), I'd say that CBCS is now officially the "real deal" (though they already were... Steve).

Re: Beckett acquires CBCS
I suspect each time Borock sells a comic grading company he signs an agreement not to get back into the business for a specific number of years. It's certainly possible he'll do this again down the road.

Re: Beckett acquires CBCS
I would assume he's still going to be the head of CBCS, but that's a good point. Maybe he's leaving.StarBrand wrote:I suspect each time Borock sells a comic grading company he signs an agreement not to get back into the business for a specific number of years. Re: Beckett acquires CBCS
I'm thinking he may have signed a 5 or 7 year agreement to stay on and after that he could be free to start another grading company. Just speculation of course.

Re: Beckett acquires CBCS
When he left CGC, I'm sure his contract was that he couldn't do professional comic grading and encapsulation because he spent several years at Heritage Auctions before starting CBCS.StarBrand wrote:I'm thinking he may have signed a 5 or 7 year agreement to stay on and after that he could be free to start another grading company. Re: Beckett acquires CBCS
But that part of the agreement most likely eventually expired.

Re: Beckett acquires CBCS
Right, but I'd be surprised if Beckett would let him grade at CBCS then start another grading company without that gap in between.StarBrand wrote:But that part of the agreement most likely eventually expired.
Re: Beckett acquires CBCS
Yeah I think there'd be quite a gap in between. At this point he may figure his old companies might be too hard for a new grading service to compete with.

Re: Beckett acquires CBCS
There are only so many times that you can start the same company based almost exclusively on your reputation. When Steve leaves, the reputation will leave with it. Unless the QC is there (and personally, I think CGC is winning that battle), then it's just another encapsulation company. The more there are, the more important the brand will be, as opposed to the person.
Re: Beckett acquires CBCS
CBCS might improve under the new ownership and presumably better funding.

Steve is the grading/encapsulating version of Jim Shooter!nycjadie wrote:There are only so many times that you can start the same company based almost exclusively on your reputation. Re: Beckett acquires CBCS
It will be interesting to see what this does. In baseball cards there was a little bit of a schism of integrity, versus census, versus some other companies becoming niche specialists. I agree that CBCS has a ton to catch up on census wise, label design wise, case wise, etc. I too have also found CGC grading to be more consistent and harsh (I don't like anecdotals, but CGC seems much harsher when I reslab a book from CBCS>>CGC- my grades almost never go up, even after a press or clean).
That said, competition is always nice, though hate having my slabs not match!!!!

Re: Beckett acquires CBCS
That's mostly CGC's fault. There have been at least 4 different CGC labels possible for "regular CGC 9.8" Valiant books (original red, original blue, larger number blue, newest blue), and at least three different types of shell casings (original slim, original thicker, new case).apacseller wrote:That said, competition is always nice, though hate having my slabs not match!!!!
CBCS is definitely different, but CGC was already a variety for itself.

Agreed, the label looks so awful I thought I was the only person who thought that way.
