In memory of Franco Harris....and Valiant tie-in!

Post by reddog »

Sometime in the mid 1990's in Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Police and Allegheny County Police teamed up to conduct a gun buyback program. The setting (which even today I don't know why) was the Eide's Comic book store in downtown Pittsburgh. I went with my Daisy BB semi-auto and handed it to the guy. "Wait a minute", he said, "This is a bb gun!" "Yeah", I said trying not too sound high, "it's a gun." One of the two celebrities sitting at the table looked up and said "Yeah, it's a gun, let him in" and I moved on over. At the table were Franco Harris and Jim Shooter and it was Harris who said let him in. ! One could pick signed comics or a signed NFL football. I took the football! I already had a ton of signed Shooter comics. Franco took the ball out of bin, rolled it over and signed it boldly. "Here you go, young man. Thanks for coming down,\", he said.
Franco was a great football, player, a great neighbor for the city and I'm sure resting comfortably now wherever he is. Rest in Peace Franco, we miss you already. Image

I never really displayed the ball but for the first time, I took it out and left it on the little table for Saturday's game vs. the Raiders.....we won!!! i think I'll keep it out for two more games.
