Cloonan & Sharp on XO!!

Post by Dallow Spicer1 »

Coming in November a new ongoing XO series. Becky Cloonan is a name I’ve heard of but not sure I’ve read her books. Not sure who Michael Conrad is?
Liam Sharp is a ballsy choice for artist, I’m not a huge fan of the overly muscular art style but I’d rather have that than the cartoony style the DMG books have previously had.

I’m intrigued by this…hope it delivers.

Here’s the blurb….

X-O Manowar will be starring in X-O Manowar Unconquered, a new series from Becky Cloonan, Michael Conrad, and Liam Sharp. The comic will feature the hero encountering a powerful enemy in "uncharted cosmic territory" that will force him to explore his past as he falls into uncertain waters. The sci-fi epic will embrace the character's history while presenting new challenges for the character along the way.

Sharp shared the cover on Twitter and it’s spectacular. He’s doing the guts too, which is a great sign.
Egad, a base tone denotes a bad age!

Yeah the cover looks very impressive, wish it wasn’t all the way off in November. I hope the writing delivers.

Not sure about Conrad but I vouch for Becky Cloonan.

I really enjoyed her sci-fi mystery for Image Comics; "Southern Cross."

Got to admit, that’s a great cover!! He had another ‘warm up’ piece of art and that looked great too. I’m optimistic for this one :hope:

Attention to detail. Didn't even notice yet.

I think the musculature here is F*n' ridiculous, but welcome to comics I guess...

Love XO, but not sure about the Hulk design going on here tbh. Makes me concerned that Aric is getting transformed into an excessively simple and violent meathead after the effort that's been put in to date to grow and mature the character in-story to date, but we'll see.

Taking Aric off into some uncharted region of space for a boss fight hardly seems like an idea that a lot of thought was put into in terms of the wider VU, but it'll probably be decent enough fare as a casual read I'd imagine.

After that last run, they had to get a solid creative team in place to bring X-O back right. I’m definitely on board this go round, Sharp is a beast! It’s still 8 months out, so I’m looking forward to hearing more about the story direction from the writing team. :thumb:

I’m holding out hope for this X-O and am willing to give the new team a shot. Looks kind of fun actually. When I was young I start collecting Namor, The Submariner from Marvel. Must have been around 1991-1992. I loved the series and it had the same type of art style most marvel books had back then.

Then around issue 20 this new artist, Jae Lee, came on board with this angular, overstylized, darker art style. I was enthralled with the drastic change and to this day just love the run he did on Namor. That’s the cool thing about new creative teams with different visions. It can really be an exciting, worthwhile change if done right.

I’m hoping for the same with this X-O…but please bring back his history and wife(s) for darn sakes….

Yes I’d like to see stronger ties to continuity, however seems unlikely given the story line has his going out into space again.

The main thing for me is that they reverse the Shanhara talking thing. I wasn’t keen when Kindt introduced it but then Hallum took it to ridiculous lengths and ruined the character.
