I had the 1,000,000th post on this board and all I got was this lousy custom ranking.

The line has been drawn and the edict has been issued: I have to reduce the size of my collection.

My thought is to first eliminate things that I have in multiple formats. For VEI, would you keep the single issues or the deluxe editions? Or do you sell it all and go digital?

Personally I would love to keep deluxe only. I love those big books. easy to read, re-read, and store. They are durable, etc.. problem for me is that VEI has not bee great at putting everything in deluxe as it seemed they were going to do. For example: Unity vol 2 Deluxe

Don’t choose! If you need to make a choice, dump the issues. Deluxe editions are better for return reading. If you need the issues that aren’t in deluxe format, you can grab a papaerback later.

I went with the Deluxe HC’s and stopped collecting the monthly issues. I buy the TPB if a series is not made it into a Deluxe Edition or they don’t plan to release one. I will throw out one other idea here: you could send off your books to a bindery and have them bound into HC books with your design of the covers. I did that with the entire V1 series and now have around 25 hardcover editions. I also did that with Quantum and Woody, Batman: Knightfall, and the entire run of Green Arrow.

I began transitioning from singles to HC's and TPB's about 10 years ago and still acquire them but this year started reading digitally because of aging eyesight and the ability to zoom and I now wonder if this is the beginning of another transition from physical copies to digital. Time will tell - ask me about 3 years from now.

I seem to be having an explosion of floppies in my place the last 3 years after primarily being HCs for about a decade.

If I was having to chose to keep only one I would likely chose the HCs.

This is exactly what I am going to do with all my singles. I already have most of the V1 pages how I want them - Problem is I suck at making computer art so this project will take a lifetime.
At any rate you can also combine multiple TPBs into a HC bind.

And as was just mentioned, digital is an option - and while this is a superior option in many ways (green, space saving, etc..) It is my least favorite; however this is probably because I dont have the proper media device for it. I imagine that a nice size screen tablet with a superb non eye-straining screen would make this option awesome. I just dont have such a device.

If enough people stop buying the single issues... It won't be worth it to keep printing them... Then they won't have anything to collect into hardcover.

What other ways can we slowly kill our own hobby?

My opinion is to keep the single issues. I used to collect multiple formats of things and if/when I can, I get single issues first and foremost. They're easier to read (smaller to hold) and more fun, in my opinion. I only get collections if I miss the boat on a title and said title may then increase in price and/or hard to find in single issues.
The "Unity Suite" ... in progress ...
