Is Valiant more emotionally mature than most publishers?
About the same?
In the pre-Unity VH1 I'd say definitely
In the post-Unity I'd say maybe sometimes if we get lucky
In VEI, I am not familiar with enough other comics to really say. But I think it's also the "maybe sometimes if we get lucky"

Re: Is Valiant more emotionally mature than most publishers?
I would say that VH1 through the end of Unity is definitely more sophisticated in it's content than other comics of that time. But, there are some semantics to be debated about statements delving into "emotional maturity". For example, there can be some crossover between "sophistication in content" and "emotional maturity" as a reader of that content. However, the observation by Moore in the article you've linked is about "emotional arrest" in the adult superhero comic readership. So there is a difference there that is very important.Oxmyx wrote:About the same?

For example, stunted growth is a different phenomena, and independent of the books themselves displaying an "emotional sophistication". Basically, you can have both things happening at the same time. For example, early Valiant books can be sophisticated and present content that requires greater emotional maturity to digest, but that does not diminish the idea that the modern readership, consisting mostly of adults maybe under what Moore states is a "kind of deliberate, self-imposed state of emotional arrest".
So, to put it crystal clearly, if we were to make a statement that combines the thread title with Alan Moore's observations, then that statement would be that fandom of early Valiant's more sophisticated content does not justify an aging readership that holds onto superhero fandom in comics, and adults reading super-hero comics indicates a state of emotional arrested development.
Interesting topic, and although I am a fan of superhero comics I would say from the inside looking out that I thought this was obvious. On one side, I've bought many books for years now that I don't read. I do this for a myriad of reasons. On the other hand, I get super jazzed when the shiny good guy in the movies bashes the evil *SQUEE* around. Sooooo..... -shrugs-
I think there's a little truth to what Moore is saying.

Do you mean 'mainstream superhero comic publishers' specifically? There are a lot of indy and alt publishers constituting 'the industry' that publish plenty of emotionally mature content, so relative to that bunch... But relative to 'mainstream superhero comic publishers'? I don't know, there's been plenty of emotionally mature stuff come out of Marvel and DC over the years so probably 'to the same degree as'?

So far this conversation is like that class where the teacher makes a point and discussion ensues where the whole class speaks to the point they think is being made, but never actually approaches the truth of the subject.

The truth of the matter may be in Scorsese's analogy that superhero movies are akin to roller coasters...fun, thrilling, and possibly addictive, and can have long lines. I enjoyed that.IMJ wrote:See post #2.Shadowman99 wrote:So what is the truth of the subject then?IMJ wrote:So far this conversation is like that class where the teacher makes a point and discussion ensues where the whole class speaks to the point they think is being made, but never actually approaches the truth of the subject.

I've been looking everywhere for the ultra-rare Turok vs Blister issue. Anybody able to help me out?

I'm curious... how often do you see non-fiction comics? What topics?Shadowman99 wrote:Do you mean 'mainstream superhero comic publishers' specifically? I can get behind that statement, absolutely.Oxmyx wrote:The truth of the matter may be in Scorsese's analogy that superhero movies are akin to roller coasters...fun, thrilling, and possibly addictive, and can have long lines. I enjoyed that.
I recall a publisher doing a lot of biography comics - I think it might've been Blue Water after their 10th Muse and Isis push ended.Oxmyx wrote:I'm curious... how often do you see non-fiction comics? What topics?

Erm... I'm a bit confused here, as I don't see in my post I made over a week ago there that I specifically mentioned "non-fiction comics" at allOxmyx wrote:I'm curious... how often do you see non-fiction comics? I'd genuinely answer your question if I could, but I'm at a loss on this one...
