Re: Super Mario Bros Rare Random House Variant 8.5
I bought this one raw on eBay some time ago. Years. I had it pressed and graded. It looks better than a 8.5 in the slab. I should look up the notes. One area where is a finger bend on the edge. I would have used a tool to press that down before grading, so I cal that a miss on CCS. Other than that, I’m happy with the job and grade. It was not a perfect book.
I believe I have two other copies, both sealed in the package. One is not nearly as nice as this copy ironically enough. The 2nd is probably the same as this one. Mint in package is not necessarily true for this book, at least literally for those that I have.

Right, these came in the cassette tape packaging for a "read-along" book but didn't have the cardboard backing like the Batman: Almost Got 'Im (very early Harley Quinn).
Very tough to find, period. Tougher to find still packaged, and even tougher to find packaged and undamaged. I wouldn't worry about the 8.5 since the book itself is so rare.
I see them for sale about once every 5 years, and I have only won them about once every 10 years.

Re: Super Mario Bros Rare Random House Variant 8.5
I just looked up the notes - "staple rusted top of spine."
Well nuts. I see it quite visibly now. I think CGC considers rust removal a purple label. Anyway, a miss on my end. I haven't tried rust removal yet on a graded book. Looking at the book closely (based solely from the outside), without the staple, I'd grade this a 9.4. Still a nice book.
Looking this up on your site, it looks like there are two graded copies, this 8.5 and a 7.0. For now, the highest graded book. I think it's possible the book could go higher if the rust was addressed, and the finger mark at the top of the book was pressed.

If one of your other copies visually looks about the same grade as this one, but doesn't have the rusty staple...nycjadie wrote:I just looked up the notes - "staple rusted top of spine."

We know of at least two in the package which are going to be rock solid 9.4+.
But yeah anyone else who took these out of the package gave them to a kid to read or read them to a kid.
I think the one I just sold to magnus20009, which is out of the package, is better than 9.0.

I absolutely love my Nintendo set I got from CKB and doubt anywhere else would I have been able to get a complete set of Nintendo issues.ckb wrote:We know of at least two in the package which are going to be rock solid 9.4+.

I am really happy to have a Random House copy of this book but I don't think it would hit 9.0+. The inside of the book is perfect but the heavy cover stock cover has a few issues. I do not know what this would grade, but it doesn't matter as it is not being graded and is staying in the personal collection. I am enjoying slowly going through the full Nintendo and full WWF sets I got for CKB.

Outside of a chip on the top margin above the “S” and a couple of those creases color-breaking at the spine, and perhaps a rounded corner, that book might press out very well. If you send it to CCS, it could just return to you 16 months later (!) at a 9.0
