I got such a great chuckle out this!

First, that he was going through the Face Book stream. Second, that he was the first to respond. And third, this response is just friggin perfect!!

idk it seems like the exact kind of hubris that destroyed Valiant and the entire comics industry in the 90's. Acting like it was him alone who created X-O. Wasn't the armor designed by everyone in knob row doing a version and then mixing the best parts together? That's the story I've heard. Weren't the first issues written by Shooter and Englehart? So did Bob come up with the 'Conan in a can' idea and then inked it? I don't doubt that Bob contributed a lot of good ideas to early Valiant, but man have a little humility and acknowledge the contributions of others. It's just gross to me.

This made me laugh so hard! And really I don't think he is taking all the credit, just saying this was his favorite. I thought it was a brilliant response. I am sure many people who helped create these look back on it with fond memories. And if they played a part in it then they did create it. Well done!

Totally agree. His response didn't include the word "I," and I took it as the role he played in creating the character. I liked his next post on Facebook, where he talks about the reason why it's called X-O was to get space right next to X-Men on the shelves.

Bob Layton and many other Valiant artists and writers from the different iterations of the company are members of the FB page and regularly contribute to the discussions posted and answer questions fans may have. I work very hard to promote their work, both for Valiant and with other publishers and they greatly appreciate the support. Bob is in no way arrogant and I've found him to be funny and effusive for all the fans both young and old-ish?

I met Bob Layton about 2 years ago at a local convention. He was pleasant to talk to and generous enough with his time to speak to my 6 year old daughter for awhile. He actually told my wife and daughter a personal story about himself and his own daughter and how much they used to love to watch Star Wars together. My daughter was probably wearing a Star Wars shirt at the time. He then signed a print for my daughter and shook my hand. I know this is one isolated meeting but I didn't see any attitude or arrogance from him what so ever.

I think that trying to interpret anything beyong him exercising a bit of flippant spur-of-the-moment humour here is reading too much into it.

Yeah, you're probably right. It just irks me. Even in a flippant throw-away remark someone's character can be revealed. Saying "Co-creating it" would have been so easy to say and much more in line with what we all know is a collaborative medium, especially since in the actual comic books that exist he is neither the writer nor the penciller. But yeah I get it saying "Creating it" is a better zing on social media, which is all that matters at the moment, I'm just over-analyzing it. He didn't use "I", but it's definitely an implied "I"

I guess I'm still bitter after recently re-skimming and selling off my post-unity Valiants. The level and speed at which they (especially Layton since he was the big kahuna) turned a humming BMW into a sputtering Ford Escort and then drove it off the cliff is amazing to behold.

You make some astute observations here :thumb:

I still need to get around to reading the VH1 XO series. I will one day, but repeatedly hearing that it reaches a point where the quality drops doesn't further inspire me to pick it up for obvious reasons. I will do, but I received a stack of reading about 12 inches thick for christmas (including 'real' books!) so it'll be a while before I get to it yet.

What a d-bag lol. I can't wait until the Bloodshot movie so we can hear about how he created Bloodshot all by himself.

There does seem to be something about the comics industry where creators get a little success and it goes straight to their heads. Maybe since people who got really good at making comics probably did so while not being normally socialized while growing up? Who knows, but the comics industry would be better off without all the oversized egos.

I really hope this is all very tongue-in cheek, otherwise this guy has some serious delusion issues

I love how this image is finished with "Something went wrong."

Couldn't be more accurate

I miss Future Comics. It's not that they were life changing, but they felt like comics built from the combined DNA of his Iron Man and Valiant runs.

It's clunky, and I'm not even much of a Bob Layton fan, but I think it means that he's a creator of Iron Man stories. Which he is. Not THE creator of Iron Man.
