'Crack the Slab' or let it be??

Post by TheeBaldMoose »

I'm kind of torn as to what to do, and I need to ask my fellow collectors what they might do in a similar situation.

I have a Divinity III #1 1:50 that is CGC'ed 9.8 that already has Kindt and Barron sigs on it. Adam Gorham is coming to ECCC this year, and I'm quite tempted to have CGC crack it so that he can sign it.

This copy is the "1st signed" by Kindt and Barron, and I don't know if Gorham has signed any of these in the past. It's been a year, so I am guessing he probably has.

Sure, there is risk involved, as cracking any 9.8 could lead to damage, but I am a gambler (somewhat), as long as the outcome is at a higher level.

My main questions to you all...

Do I crack the slab and have Adam sign it?
Does having the cover artist signature mean as much as the author/artists?
Am I just plain stupid for wanting/thinking of cracking this book open?

What's the value difference between a 9.8 and a 9.6/9.4/9.2?

If its not much, then its probably worth the risk. I personally don't think the cover artist signature will add any value to the book.

It depends on why you're doing it. If it is for your personal collection, go for it. If you are doing it with the intention of selling then I would say it isn't worth the risk.

I suppose signing the slab is out of the question...

Ditto exactly, even the punctuation.

Have a close look at the book. Check the grader’s notes. See if it has anything that could have been on the edge of 9.6 to 9.8. If it doesn’t, then you are likely safe.

If it comes back a 9.6, then you can always send to CCS for a press and then CGC for a re-grade. This is worst case of course, and lot 100% going to happen. But it is a small gamble.

I think having the cover artist sig is the most important. Like someone said before, if it is for your personal collection, crack. If it is for resale, leave alone. Also, the newest CGC cases are a lot harder to crack so be careful if it's a new one.

If CGC is there to witness his sig, can't they crack it on the spot, witness and immediately take possession of the book and old case for provenance?

I've always thought that if I could get Hairsine's sig on my slabbed Divinity #1s, I might do like you. So I'm kinda interested in this.

Yea, they can do all that, but they have you sign a waiver, because while they are better at opening their slabs, damage still can happen. Furthermore, if damage does happen, they won't be responsible

No.
No.
Yes.

Never crack out!!!!
Find happiness in the signatures and grade you have obtained.
Focus you attention in finding another comic to have signed and slabbed.
There are many other comics / variants that want to be slabbed hard.

This is very true, as this book (when I got it) wanted to be slabbed so hard!

So many first appearances, just trying to make it as bad *SQUEE* as possible, as I think the Red Brigade and The Red Legend have a solid future

Thanks guys, guess it'll stay home (this time). Guess I will wait until I find me a Harsine signing...

It appears that you've already hit the max at 9.8. But if you crack it open you pose the risk of possibly damaging the comic, no matter how careful you may be.

I would say, live and let live. Be content in what you have.
