Vin Diesel in Talks to Join Sony’s ‘Bloodshot’ Movie

Vin Diesel is in talks to join Sony’s “Bloodshot” movie based on the Valiant comic, TheWrap has learned.

Sony revealed it would be moving forward with its five-film shared universe plan for joint franchises based on the Valiant comic books “Harbinger” and “Bloodshot.”

“Bloodshot” is about a mortally wounded soldier resurrected with cutting-edge nanotechnology and tasked with rounding up superpowered outcasts known as “harbingers.” “Bloodshot” was created by Kevin Van Hook, Don Perlin and Bob Layton in 1992.

The film will also reunite Diesel with “Fast and the Furious” mega-producer Neal Moritz, who is producing alongside Valiant’s Dinesh Shamdasani.

Dave Wilson, who is “Deadpool” director Tim Miller’s partner at Blur Studios, is attached to direct. Oscar-nominated screenwriter Eric Heisserer (“Arrival”) is writing the screenplay.

According to insiders, Sony and Wilson plan to follow in the footsteps of the recent success of “Logan” and “Deadpool” with an R-rated take on the comic adaptation that will be tonally and aesthetically influenced by high-concept, sci-fi blockbusters of the late ’80s including “Robocop,” “Terminator,” and “Total Recall.”

“Bloodshot” will be a return to Diesel’s roots — he launched to international fame as a hard-hitting action star in “xXx” and “Pitch Black” before locking into “The Fast and the Furious” series. Diesel was also 2017’s top-grossing actor at the box office. According to Forbes, Diesel topped the list with $1.6 billion in global ticketing receipts, thanks to the success of “xXx: The Return of Xander Cage” and “Fate of the Furious.”

Diesel is now locking down a superhero franchise to call his own — one that Sony is targeting as a hard-R, big-budget tentpole for 2019.

Valiant’s library is truly one of the great and as-yet untapped wells of intellectual property. The publisher’s bench of more than 2,000 superhero characters (with lifetime sales of more than 80 million copies) makes it the third largest library of superheroes behind Marvel and DC — and the only one not currently owned by a major conglomerate.

Diesel is repped by CAA. Sony had no comment.

When you put all the ingredients together, it seems to have great potential:
Diesel in the lead. Dave Wilson directing. Eric Heisserer writing. Moritz and Dino producing.

I'm a big fan of Riddick, so I'm happy with this casting. It also means that there is much more chance of success. Glad they're going the R-rating route as well.

"Hard-R" in the article. That's appropriate for Bloodshot, but won't end up with any Bloodhound toys in Happy Meals.

Awesome news. R rating, and Vin. Hopefully this becomes a 10 film franchise by the time Vin is done...

Vin Diesel is a good choice for Bloodshot.

The only question that remains is whether he would make a better Ray Garrison or Angelo Mortalli?

Personally, I would rather have him play Angelo.

Personally, I would rather have him play Angelo.

I think it's more about the Angelo Mortalli backstory, which was that he was involved in mafia hits... which is a very 1990s thing (Goodfellas, Reservoir Dogs).
Having Bloodshot's backstory as an injured veteran is a better match for 2001 to present than the mafia stuff.

Valiant comics is still less than 1% of the comic market, right? The idea that our actors are going to be anyone who have been in anything outside of Iowa community theater is kinda ridiculous.

We're the true fans. We're going to hate all the studio changes to the movies no matter what. That's a given. But at least we get to hate big names.

Are there other actors who could play the part? Absolutely. But this is true for many roles in Hollywood.

This casting is not bad.

I've been thinking about what they might change. ...I'm thinking maybe the red meat diet,might be to rough on ppl with weak stomachs

It's a hell of a lot better than Jared Leto.

I never even thought about him (Vin) playing Bloodshot... But the more I think about it and look at him and think about his attitude and personality.... I'm like... This could work.
....add in Sony wants a HARD R movie with a big budget

I think Sony is ready to compete... Tired of being in the shadows... Which is good for us. Both Sony & Dino are "hungry" to show the world what they can do. I'm in...
