Replace valiant coupons for harbinger?

Post by Etrigan »

Just curious, i recently bought harbinger 1-6 for 30 bucks, they didnt say anything about coupons so i took a gamble, they are nice condition.

I sent a message long before the auction ended to see if they had the coupons and they just replied lol

I have not received them yet but i was wondering if i could cannibalize another issue of harbinger 2-6, take the coupon from those and replace for a harb 1? I have done with with asm 239 and ff 252. But is this the same case?

The coupons are issue-specific. Harbinger #1 has "Coupon #1", etc., through the six issues.

Ok, since the one i purchased looks really good trough pics, i might get a low graded harb 1 and repalce it.

Would it still be possible to do?

Great site btw greg

It would probably be possible, but I think most coupons are stapled in, and the removal/replacement of staples is a restoration process.

If this is only for your collection, you can do whatever you want. If it's for resale (someday), then it needs to be disclosed to a prospective buyer.

Of course, i repalced the tatooz with asm 239 and tested taking the staples with other comics, i think i did well. And i dont really sell comics, id only sell this if/when i get a graded on, was thinking about getting one from your sale but i had money problems. But if i do i am an honest seller and would disclose that.

Seriously - don't mess with your Harbinger 1 like that. The staples and spine on H1 are notoriously fragile, it's not worth it. If you find a low grade copy with a coupon for cheap (not as easy as it sounds!) just disassemble and remove the coupon from the low grade copy and slip it in the better copy between the staples...no need to do major surgery.

aren't the coupons stapled in?

and i understand your worry, i know i just starting posting here, but i have been lurking for a while, i am a huge VH1 fan since childhood and am trying to build my collection.
the last year i have been getting back into reading valiant and rebuilding from my collection i lost years ago. I have lost alot of my knowledge and feel like i wouldn't contribute to the board or make myself look naive (lol) so i just lurked. maybe in the next couple of days i will post "my valiant story". But i assure you this question is just for my own use for this comic i will not sell.

TLDR; huge valiant fan, been lurking, embarrassed to post, this is to fix a comic i will not sell and only to keep for my personal collection

I have seen two type of Harbinger #1;

One with three staples (coupon stapled in).

One with two staples (coupon slid in, and not fully attached),

Canada got the same Valiant books as the U.S. There is only one version.

Wait. Are you talking about Harbinger Renegade coupons? That was #1 - #4.

This topic is talking about Harbinger #1 - #6 from the 1992 series.

This discussion made we wanna check my Harbinger #1 to see if the coupon had two or three staples. But I’ve never opened mine, it’s in a stack for CGC to be shipped off probably after the holiday season. I am however, curious now... :hm:

So there are definitely 2 and 3 staple versions of Harbinger 1 1992. The chances that the coupon in the two staple version was not stapled-in is high, but it is not 100%. I have seen three staple copies where the coupon was missed by the staples, and I have seen 2 staple copies where it hit by the staples.

So, my comment was that disassembling an otherwise high grade copy of H1 to match the staple holes of a coupon from another book is an unnecessary risk to put your book through if you just want a complete copy for yourself. If you want to "fool" someone you sell the book to, well then you are on your own.

But really if you think about it, the coupons could easily be duplicated by a good print shop to the point that it could not be detected. In order to begin such an undertaking from a financial standpoint, though, you would need a buttload of high grade H1's without coupons. If such a cache exists, we have yet to see it, but it could be cobbled together at great expense and risk. Until the book is worth $300+ in 9.2, I'm not sure we need to worry about this very much.

Hey, trust me, I agree with you. I am just trying to comment that I don't think current market conditions make this viable...but there is the potential for it to become viable. And really I don't think anyone would be able to tell. It is important for the community to be aware of this on some level...because there is an unending source of people who are OK with being dishonest.
