After a long wait I got this back from CBCS Verified Sigs 9.6
In my expert opinion, the signatures are legit. Now, where's my fee? :?

It's great, and I see it's on the new yellow label. I have some feelings about them moving from red to yellow for the "verified" as opposed to "authenticated," but it's really cool nonetheless. I think this is a really nice slab.

Grader’s notes: “Surface wear near spine on back cover breaks color.”

What I see is the top staple seems to face a little more toward the back cover than the front (when comparing to the bottom staple). There seems to be a little “crimp” or stress line by the top staple on the back cover that may break color a little. It is hard to see.... but there does seem to be some white color there. It seems to be as long as the staple. I guess this is the area that CBCS is noting. But, I am not sure. Maybe they are talking about just the fold , or edge of the spine itself.

The notes don’t seem to be very precise to find this area.

So, I bought the above comic from a seller off of E-Bay. He said he bought it in a large lot of Valiant comics 12 years ago and did not know who signed it. What do y’all think? Could it be another BWS signature? The only problem I see is that Greg said he liked to sign on the lower left of a comic book.

Sweet. So, the question is… should I send this one in to try and get “verified sig” by CBCS? When I checked the “Population Report” for CBCS I can find three BWS verified signatures on Archer and Armstrong #0 comics. There is one BWS verified sig regular edition in 8.5 grade and two BWS verified signatures in the rarer “Gold Edition” variant at grades of 9.6 and 7.5. So, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of his sigs on this comic.

This comic has a couple of small spine stresses on the front cover and some light wear and 3 or 4 light spine stresses on the back cover. Would need to be pressed…but no folds or creases. So, probably has no chance to grade in the 9s.

One more BWS verification needed. I bought this from an eBay seller who advised it is a BWS sig. Thoughts?

The above looks very similar to the signature on depluto’s Solar #1 (on page 2 of this thread). Also, the sig is kind of similar to Greg’s “Unity Saga” slip case (on page 3 of this thread). It is weird how his signature has changed so much. He went from “Barry Smith,” to what looks like 2 forms of scribble. Sometimes he simply signed “BWS.” Im not sure if he suddenly decided to change his signature, (like he suddenly changed his name), or if it was gradual. What do you think Greg and Ed? Does one sig style represent a certain time period?…. Or, did he just change it up with no rhyme or reason?

The most current signatures in the Limited Editions of Monsters are slightly different again -- a slightly shortened and even uglier version of the one on Solar #1 above. Well, maybe it turned out to look uglier because BWS wasn't really into the idea of spending an entire day on signing 1,200 or so copies (despite of whatever signing bonus).

I found this signature example on the web as an example of the Monsters book signing. I don’t know if he is changing things up just to be eccentric; or if the signature has gotten shorter to be quicker? But, none of his signatures look like they take much time at all… so I don’t see the point in getting shorter.

Funny…I just see beauty gazing upon that BWS sig. :-) So weird how many versions he has!

Update: Based on this thread I sent my Solar 1 BWS sig book in for grading. Got a CGC Qualified 9.8 back (prefer over CBCS verified). My first graded BWS cover (if we’re all right :-)). Stoked!

The raw book looks great. Did you chose to get it pressed before grading?
