Custom Enamel Pins?

Do you think Valiant fans would be interested in custom enamel pins? is it a thing we are allowed to do? Just curious for reasons....

New Valiant things require permission from VEI, but I think they are often happy when fans do small projects and label them as fan-made.

Heres my idea. I have sketch cover that I wanna turn into a pin...

Thinking of doing a run of 100 and having them numbered.

Yep, I would suggest getting permission from both VEI and Rivera.

I commissioned the work. I understand I would need VEI's permission but I own the art.

Think people would be interested?

You don't own reproduction rights to the artwork.

I'm glad that you know that VEI's permission is needed, because that's the #1.

When you get VEI's permission, you should ask VEI whether you also need Rivera's permission. VEI's contract with Rivera may state that all works using VEI copyrights are the sole property of VEI. In that case, VEI owns 100% of the copyright to Rivera's commissions and you can do whatever you want if you have VEI's permission. If VEI does not have a clear contract with Rivera regarding unofficial uses of the VEI copyright (such as fan commissions), then VEI could potentially sue Rivera for profiting from VEI copyrights. I'm sure the industry already has an "unwritten rule" standard for this situation, and I doubt that it is to sue artists for fan commissions. However, VEI, Marvel, DC, whomever are always within their rights to sue anyone who is using their copyrights in any unauthorized way. Rivera would need to protect himself, since he is at least a partial copyright holder because it is his artwork... unless VEI has clearly claimed all ownership of fan commissions created by Rivera (which only VEI and Rivera would know).

Ask VEI.

Your second question about whether fans would be interested is irrelevant to legality, so as long as you're not asking whether popular vote should override copyright law... then my answer is "Yes! I would be interested in a VEI-and-artist approved fan project like this!"

For those who might be confused about the "serious discussion" for fan projects (which should be fun!), let's just say this website has a 12+ year history of fan projects, discussion of fan projects, and discussion about the permissions needed for fan projects. Being online at ValiantFans.com ... the topic has come up before.

I love the idea of fan art, and I think this would be a fun little project! Would you just want to do this one pin (Valiant approval pending), or would you want to do more? Seems like it might be just as easy to gather a few different artist interpretations for a project of, say 5-7 different pinnys?

Love the art, and with Valiant's approval, I am in!

That sketch is absolutely fantastic. I love Rivera's work soo much!!

Depending on how you manage to convert that imagery to an enamel pin, I'd likely be interested. Do you know much about making enamel pins, or have a company lined up that can do it?
