How Do You Guys Press Your Comics?

Post by Serpentor »

Are any of you doing it yourself, or perhaps you have someone who does great work who is faster and lower cost than the "professional" services? I know some collectors have negative views of pressing, but I am not here to discuss that as the topic has been beaten to death all over the internet. For those who are okay with pressing, can you comment on my questions?

People who take issue with pressing are fewer and fewer. Those that I have done business with who asked if a book had been previously pressed, did not ask out of a noble position of purity; they asked because they wanted to know if THEY could potentially press an unpressed book for a potentially greater return on investment! (NOTE: This is a smart move btw...)

I use a couple of pressing options.

1.) I have had a bit of success with CCS for books I expect to hold a market value of $500 or more. I use their full pressing / cleaning service. I suspect as they are owned by CGC, they "know" what CGC graders look for.

2.) For commons and bulk stacks, I have a presser in Michigan who cuts me a really good deal for about $2 per book. I have scored a number of 9.8's from this guy which are now sitting in several board member collections.

3.) I have heard (word of mouth) of a few individuals who are (supposedly) incredibly skilled at pressing, and will test them out in the very near future to see their results.

Of course I visually inspect and prescreen all books myself, and am pretty good at getting books into the 9.6-9.8 range now.

Not yet, but soon (eventually) I will begin pressing myself.

When this time comes, know that the level of OCD and love will be insane.

I've primarily gone through CCS as my presser for the exact reasons DBS eludes to, they seem to be owned by CGC. The price isn't that bad, as I have tried to not do many non-expensive books. I too have had great results with CCS, as many of my books come back at 9.8. I also have practiced the process of asking if a book as been pressed. It's much cheaper to purchase a 9.6 or a 9.4 especially if it seller knows the mark ups from CGC/CBCS. If it's damage, then pass. If it's never been pressed, and a pressing causes the book to go up (I'm 4 out of 4 here), then it's worth it to me!

I don't flip though, I primarily purchase for Sig Series

I put mine on the ground between two chunks of ceramic tile and drive my truck onto it in a few days a 1.0 is suddenly a 8.5

I would be very interested in sending some books to your guy. Any chance you might pm me his contact info?

After putting the comic into the bag, I lay it on it's face, then press down with a sliding motion from the bottom to the top till all the air is out, then I close and seal the flap! Easy! :P

I prefer the Diamond press (also called the 3-1-1 or the 1-2-1-1 press). Simple, but effective.

I recently sent in a comic to get pressed / cleaned by CGC. It basically went from a 7.0 to an 8.5.

When it went from 4k at 7.0 to 8k - 10k at 8.5 .... a cgc 8.5 (gain of 1.5) is not to shabby if I say so myself ...

So yeah ... pressing is worth it.
