Error Variants and/or Issues
50-75 copies (estimated) - X-O Manowar (2012) #1 (Error Second Print w/ First Print listed)
UNK copies - X-O Manowar #15 (Kotaki 1:50 Error) - NOT the 1st Appearance of COL Jamie Capshaw because it doesn't have X-O #15 inside ( :? )
  • NOTE: A small percentage of the confirmed 400 copy print run of X-O Manowar #15 (Kotaki 1:50) are ERRORs. It is generally assumed that the ERROR copies are LESS common than the REGULAR copies. However, BOTH are rare as hell. The ERROR copies have the contents of Quantum & Woody #1 instead of X-O Manowar #15 inside the cover

I really like how you have separated Store/Convention Exclusives.

Those store/convention exclusives do (often) have lower print numbers than regular editions and order incentive variants, but they are mostly distributed through one single geographical retailer source, rather than spread across the planet in a natural way.

With every publisher creating fewer and fewer copies of certain books, and more local variants for stores/conventions, I believe that the future of collectibles will be more focused on "where did they go?" rather than "how many did they make?"

I see the Store/Convention Exclusives as very similar to sports jerseys. If you're a fan of baseball, football, hockey, futbol, basketball, etc., then you probably have a favorite team (or several) and if you're an active fan in a particular season, you might even have that year's jersey for your favorite team(s)... but would you believe that you have to get every single jersey from every single team in every single city/state/country to complete your fan status for that sport? Even for just one team, what about all the variations on the jersey of that favorite team? If you live in that city, that helps a lot. Those jerseys are pretty easy to find in stores. What if you don't live anywhere near there? Then what? Do you need the home and the away jersey? The throwback jersey(s)? The charity fundraiser jersey? The jersey for the team captain? The jersey for your favorite player (if he/she isn't captain)? The jersey for the guy on the bench who only played once?

There are official comic book variants which are available to everyone in the comic industry, and there are local variants available at participating retailer(s) in the tri-county metro area with the purchase of a smoothie.

Those aren't the same thing in any way when it comes to every other fan in the world. :D

I honestly am MORE inclined to collect all covers for a series that has a responsible/reasonable number of variants/exclusives than I am to tackle collecting a series with 40-50 covers for issue #1.

Yes, Harbinger, Imperium, Savage, and Divinity clearly had multiple covers; however, it was not to such a degree as to dissuade my enthusiasm from collecting each as it was 100% possible to do so.

Rai, Ninjak, and Bloodshot (2019) had a cRaZy high number of variant/exclusive covers for issue #1, which makes the idea of going “all-in” a bit more daunting.

I went back issue diving in London last week, and found 20 books for a total of £20, including the 2 above.

How weird that book would be sold by a clothing reseller (charity donations?) who had no idea what it was.

The seller used to post on this board and I've bought from him before with good results as long as you're not looking for 9.8 candidates.

I already have a 9.8, so I was posting this for other people who don't own a copy. Since it was mentioned elsewhere that there are estimated to be about 100 without stickers, this might be of interest to completists. I asked if it was a stock image, and if it was, whether it had any stamps or stickers, and got this response:
The one you asked about sold but I have another copy. It's relisted as ebay item #383526460444. It has no stamps or store stickers. Do you need a picture, still?

It's too bad Livewire doesn't appear on the cover of either version (regular or 1:20).
On one hand I do agee Greg.

At the same time, it like that Harbinger #3 is one of those issues where we were NOT “force fed” a *new* character. Livewire did not really pick up until later on in the series, which cause so many to overlook this issue from a collector standpoint and subsequent look for it years later.
I can't believe there are more than 1000 copies of this book. Anecdotally, I've been watching this book since it came out, among others, and it just doesn't come up available that often. I find that fact the most determinative for me in terms of scarcity, but it's all anecdotal, I admit.
This book is a serious ghost, so much so that I recently scrolled past a CGC 9.4, and snatched it up because there’s no telling when a 9.8, or raw copy might pop up. I’d probably have better luck sending it back in for a press and regrade. Those that have one (9.8) are definitely holding.

I ended up getting a 9.6 on this book and have one more raw I could keep cracking and submitting till it comes back 9.8 though...

Mine arrived yesterday, and after looking it over, I’m not sure a press will help. The book is really sharp but has some spine stress/ticks that break color, they’re small, but I’m sure that’s what knocked the grade down. Also, top left corner, looks like its missing some color right on the edge where the books folds. Decent copy though, it presents well. :thumb:

I got the Harbinger #3 1:20 cover back when it was first released at my LCS, so I am glad to say I have had one ever since day one. I can't comment on the condition of mine though, its likely not a 9.4 or better - anyone of us who has been there since the earliest days of VEI know how hard it was to get any regular issue copies in high grade, never mind the higher ratio variants!

Its a really cool book to own a copy of, I'm thinking that people generally just want to hang onto it when/if they have one. I know I do!

It’s definitely one to have in the PC, slabbed or raw... :thumb:

DINESH SHAMDASANI: “Ninja-K metal had the same print run as Bloodshot Salvation metal if I remember correctly. I was told that HW II had a run of 750 (assuming theres a few boxes still to make its way to the public). The Quantum & Woody gold had the same run as all the other golds but pops up less because we gave a ton of those out at cons and panels aimed at new fans who likely didn't convert.”
From this we learn:

200 Printed Copies - Ninja-K #1 (Suayan 1:250 Brushed Metal)
750 Printed Copies - Harbinger Wars II #1 (LaRosa 1:250 Brushed Metal) - Possibly a few boxes of copies that were never distributed.

That cannot be correct for Harbinger Wars II. If Dino was told directly that is beyond unforgivable by DMG. Harbinger Wars II only had sales of 22,621 according to Comichron. Assuming that each shop ordered in exactly 250 book lots (which is not that case) there should only be 85 copies out there - which would make it the rarest of all incentive books. For other metal books we know there were 200 copies made and I thought that might be the same for Harbinger Wars II (with not all of them being distributed. If are 750 copies for 22,621 of sales would be more like a 1:30 ratio than a 1:250.

I doubt DMG were expecting 187,500 copies of Harbinger Wars II #1 to sell so it would be quite costly for them to make that many copies.

Perhaps the person that told Dino was thinking about the 1:50 cover when they said 750 copies. 750 copies printed would make much more sense for that cover (using the same Comichron stats and perfect orders of 50 lots it would be 422 copies distributed)

Do you think that Dinesh may have misspoke and could be talking about 750 copies of a “gold book” here? That would make more sense for “give aways at conventions.” I seriously doubt that metal books were given away routinely at conventions. But, Dinesh was not in control of HW2 Metal.... so I guess anything is possible. DMG was in control for HW2 Metal. If this is correct there has to be boxes of HW2 Metal books sitting around.

How many copies of gold books were routinely printed? 750? 1000? 2000?

If 750 HW2 metal books were produced, I haven’t seen them. It’s a very hard book to come by.

The gold books were typically printed in batches of 2000. The last several years, they have been pretty banged up by getting shipped from con to con.
