Gotten into a series based on cover art?

Post by Hasmot »

That's how I got into Quantum and Woody. I saw the #4 Legend of Zelda cover and told myself that it was a must buy. Naturally, I then had to find the first three and afterwards the remaining few to catch myself up to the then current issue. Hooked.

Just curious to see if anybody else has ever been enticed to buy into a series (and which one) based on cover art alone.

That's definitely how I picked off the spinner rack at the pharmacy when I was growing up in the early 80's.

I read some story on how alternates started with a Superman promotion or something to that nature. I remember those spinner racks in grocery stores as a kid, but I never did buy a comic until much later in life (1985 baby here). I guess it was just a silly question. Apparently there is quite a divide when it comes to opinions on variant covers, but it is the sole reason I picked up a Quantum and Woody variant and how I got into East of West (not so much variant, but cover style).

the only book that comes to mind is great pacific.
it has great logo design (very important to me) and a kid standing on a pile of trash. it got my attention.
i now pick up the single issues when my LCS has a 50% off sale.

was quantum and woody your introduction to the new valiant books?

Great Pacific--just looked it up, it looks interesting.

A CBR article about Valiant and A&A was what drew me into Valiant and the relaunch. I was like, "I like to drink and shoot my crossbow". I thought A&A had a great story and looked into other titles of the relaunch and got a copy of X-O Manowar on day one--goodbye DC. I told myself I wasn't going to buy into everything, but then my original post happened. X-O, A&A, and Shadowman were joined by Q&W, then there were the other limited series, then there were Bloodshot and Harbinger to back-cap because they were all that was left. Valiant junkie all because of a variant cover tipping me over the edge. No shame in collecting/reading I guess.

great pacific isn't the best comic out there but it's setting is very unique.

here's another comic i tried based on the cover. unfortunately for this cover the comic is horrible. probably one of the best covers i've seen in years.

Possibly Astro City, based on the cover of the first issue. The quality of the writing and interior art kept me hooked after that. :thumb:

Ninjak #1.

Ninjak is a pretty stupid-sounding name. But that cover by Joe Quesada is just so beautiful, I couldn't take my eyes off it.

Hahaha! Well, it won't matter to me because JoeyQ produced the most beautiful covers for Valiant. I would dare say that he produced the best Valiant covers ever, including VEI's current output. X-O Manowar 0, Bloodshot 0, the numerous Solar covers, and Ninjak 1-3. My favorite is Ninjak 3, very beautiful.

Absolutely :) I got into the original Valiant Ninjak series based on the cover art. Most recently, the "Jem and the Holograms" series from IDW based on the cover art. Sophie Campbell is the bomb!
The "Unity Suite" ... in progress ...

Cant disagree with any of that :thumb:

Though I also loved the BWS Solar and XO covers and his Bloodshot #1, and Bart Sears' Turok and XO covers.

But in general there were some cool cover ideas in the 90s. X-Men #1 with its multiple Jim Lee covers and the gatefold for sure drew me in.

I still have a book I bought because it had a "bullet hole" on the cover right where the main character was shot. Still really cool. What the hell was the name of that...Not "The Badger," but something similar... :hm:

Pretty sure the first comic i ever bought was because of the cover art. It was the first issue of the Deathlok ongoing series in the early 90's.

I'm pretty sure I bought Shadowhawk vol. 2 #1 because of the cover.

I just want to say that this was a great random topic, it really got me thinking!!!

When I first was getting into comics I was looking for something good to latch onto. I was drawn to the cover of Uncanny X-Men 272 really appealed to me. I've been collecting X-Men and X related books ever since, but the Extinction Agenda crossover is still one of my all time favorite stories so I'm very happy with the my choice and it was all based on the cover!

I was pulled into Preacher based on the cover art. That Glen Fabry is amazing.

At the time Fathom came out I was very against the exploitation art that you'd see from Top Cow. But something about the look of the book made me pick it up and flip through it and I was amazed how beautiful it was. Needless to say I was a huge fan of Turner from that point on.

I love the old Vertigo Animal Man covers. Though I've never actually read any of them, I've definitely grabbed a number of books based on how great their covers were.

Most of the early Valiant books had amazing cover art; from all the #1 issues to books like Rai#0. It's what made the card series so freaking awesome. I know that it was the art of those early book that definitely drew me in :thumb:

never a valiant series, but yes I have picked up books based on the cover art

I would rarely buy a book with bad covers because it shows to me that not a lot of care is being put into it

Mike Wieringo's Flash run. Those covers really sold me on what was to become one of my favorite runs ever.

And pretty much every purchase in my formative years (the early 90's) was based on cover coolness alone.

This happened to me as well. I was sold on Solar because I really liked the BWS cover and silly enough I really enjoyed the title logo.

I always loved Star Wars and Star Trek so I had some comics of each but very little of anything else. Then when I was around 18 I saw the Dave Dorman card art for Ultraverse's Solitaire so I picked it up. Then I picked up everything from Ultraverse. Then I picked up everything. Thanks Dave Dorman.

Prime #1 had a great cover. I was already going to get everything Ultraverse at that point regardless, but it was still dope.

Spider-Man 2099, the latest run.

I also loved the cover of Nameless by Grant Morrison but the language was too harsh for me so I didn't finish it. Might keep it just for the cover.

And ANYthing with Eternal Warrior on it!
