In part:

SEATTLE—April 10, 2014—(NASDAQ: AMZN)—Amazon.com today announced that it has reached an agreement to acquire comiXology, the company that revolutionized the digital comics reading experience with their immersive Guided View technology and makes discovering, buying, and reading comic books and graphic novels easier and more fun than ever before.......

:hm:

Amazon allows the publishers to determine DRM presence, so that may change some things.

I'm starting to disfavor Amazon lately, though. They are beginning to become too Wal-Mart-ish. I see an evil empire quietly emerging.

Jay just received a new ipad through her work, so we FINALLY have our first tablet comic reader and we are loving it. I am hoping that Amazon acquiring them is a good thing - having things digitally is really helping us to free up space and get rid of stuff.

Interesting for sure. What long term effects this might have on the comics market overall and the digital comic market specifically, it is way too early to tell. Anytime a big corporation acquires an asset like this there is always the possibility that they will put the BOTTOM LINE ahead of what is best for the companies providing the content or the consumers buying that content.

One thing that may happen (which I hope does not - and would be very unlikely given the market share I'm sure Comixology has with the iOS crowd), is that all of Amazon's subscription services are relegated to Kindle devices. The Amazon Video app is not available for any other device (not even other Android devices) in an attempt to keep people buying their hardware and therefore being stuck in their marketplace for all content.

I could see them making this the case for Comixology (although it would be a stupid move in my opinion).

Of course, that's a moot point if the publishers ask Amazon to provide DRM free files (I can see Image comics being available DRM free, yay!) as you could then use the files however you wanted. We'll see.

Very interesting news, though.

I have an Amazon video app on my iPhone, my iPad, my PS4, and my PS3.

Edit: And while i don't have either, the app is also on Roku and Apple TV.

Yeah, Amazon is known for taking every penny of net income and pouring it back into the company. And I don't know about you guys, but profits are a good thing.

Amazon is an amazing company.

This was one of my first thoughts. But then I looked into it and found that you could read Kindle books on an iPad, iPhone, etc., so I don't think this is going to be an issue.

I had no idea that iOS devices had he Amazon Video app (I knew it was on Sony devices and a few others, but the mobile/tablet world was Kindle only as far as I knew.) What a major screw you that is to Google. No Amazon Video on any of my Android devices. That ain't right.

That actually worries me that Amazon may do a similar thing with Comixology - let the iOS devices have access, but if you want Android access, better pay for a locked down Kindle - we shall see.

Is Amazon a public company? If so, then it's possible we might.

It is public. But I imagine the numbers that the public would see be more along the lines of lump totals, as in "Comixology made $X profit off of $Y operating expenses," rather than numbers as specific as number of copies of individual titles.

Antony Johnston makes a good point here.

I can definitely see Amazon settling that score by not allowing in-app purchases on iOS devices.

I'm still wary of this deal. It could end up being awesome or awful. Either way, I'm sure the landscape of digital comics is in for a big change. I'm staying hopeful for awesome.

Further limits to the distribution of content creates an interesting scenario. It allows Amazon to squeeze content providers further. So long as Amazon continues to provide unprecedented customer service and value, that seems like a sustainable model. However, if it doesn't, it opens up the possibility for a competitor to make a lot of headway at some point.

Yeah, I think that this is likely a GREAT thing for the comic industry and that Amazon will use advertising to bring new readers and lapsed readers back into the marketplace. :hope:

Now if they can just bring out a color paperwhite with the same battery life and a HD screen and drm free comics.. the world will be a utopia. :cloud9: (at least where comics are concerned  )
It's not that I don't have an avatar... I've just been working on it for the last few hundred years.

This doesn't surprise me given AMZN's large acquisition into newspaper publications. I could see additional synergies with their Prime service...I was planning on getting the latest Kobo tablet, but I think now I have to go with AMZN.

The problem with Price wars is that it almost never works to the economic benefit of the industry. Once that level of cost-cutting has been impacted in the industry, new players learn to work in that structure. Given that I'm short NFLX stock, I'll take any AMZN advantage over Netflix I can get, haha.
