Turok #1 variant/printing error?

Post by Jace »

So I was going through some old Valiant books and I noticed one of my Turok #1's looks very different from the others. The colors on the chromium look muted. Anyone know anything about this?

Not the best quality picture, but enough to give you an idea of the difference between the covers. Gotta be a printing error right? The press running out of black ink or something.

I'd say this rare variant is worth at least five times a normal Turok #1

Some kind of exposure, maybe sun damage. I have a Ninjak #1 that's more yellow then purple due to a similar effect.

My son suggested that, but the rest of the cover isn't affected at all just the chromium

If there's on thing I've learned from my Harbinger #0 'uncut sheet variant' it's that if there's hundreds of thousands of something floating around, there would have to be a pretty substantial difference for it to be worth anything.

You could try to sell it on ebay like that, people have fallen for the X-O #0 'Ivory' business in the past.

Same here. I bought a Ninjak gold years ago that the shop owner had put in his window display and faded some of the color. Normally I wouldn't have been interested, but I picked it up for a buck.

the different materials have different lightfastness. It's simply a matter of 20 year old inks and papers dealing with varying exposures to lighting.

I suppose it's possible that it's sun damage. I bought it the day it came out though and its been in a short box since then. I seriously doubt its worth anything. I was just curious if anyone had seen one like this again.

I'm pretty sure I've seen variations like that before. Maybe the chromium printer was low on toner or something. :?

Putting ink on paper is not an exact science. It's not so much "sun damage" as it is as simple as ink on paper eventually fades. It's a chemical process so it's imperfect.

I think that xomatic and I and maybe a few others were talking about this a few years back. The picture shows what we were trying to describe at the time.
Does the "faded" one look like it might have been the chromium for the Gold edition? I think that they over printed those and that tons of them were placed on the wrong books. I think I have fifteen copies of Turok 1 (for my retirement) and at least 5 of them look like this.

Oxidation.

It is metal after all.

http://chemwiki.ucdavis.edu/Inorganic_C ... f_Chromium
It reacts with oxygen at room temperature to form chromium (III) oxide. One of chromium's most important properties is its self passivation. While it is stable in air, chromium will oxidize to form a thin layer that acts as a protective coating to prevent further corrosion.
Learned something new today.

I hope you have something else put aside for retirement, or you're going to be working until you die.

Yes it does have a definite gold hue to it ... I suppose this is another possibility. There is NO DOUBT however that whatever the reason for the difference the book is still basically worthless. 1.7 million printed!!!! :o How many people are out there that bought WHOLE CASES thinking they were going to make a killing?

I believe aluminum behaves similarly. Any oxidation will have occurred almost immediately and that thin layer of oxidation will protect the remaining chromium from further oxidation unless some new cut or break brings new, fresh chromium into contact with the air, which will then oxidize almost immediately and create a barrier to protect the remaining chromium.

A lot of shops in my area did. I remember Magnus 12 going for over a hundred bucks around that time as well. That really fueled the fire with Turok #1 speculation.
