Are Valiant Fans Special?
Over a recent conversation with another Valiant Fan, this interesting topic came up.
Are Valiant Fans Special?
"For me it is amazing how close I can be to people I have only talked to online, or even only seen what they write generally.
Some of the old-timers I have at least met physically, but others are only "virtual" and still important as friends."
So what is it what we love about Valiant Fans so much?
I wonder if Valiant Fans are special or if the same thing could have happened for another publisher if Greg Holland and Daniel Jackson had been into that publisher instead?
.....there is something magic about this place.... and I can't explain it.
Keep it going!!

Completely unique. Couldn't be replicated if you tried, IMHO. Love it here. Just the right conditions on multiple levels.

I think you'll find few places online that are so welcoming and friendly. This is definitely a unique and great group of people.

Absolutely. I love it here - the rest of the Internet seems to be polluted with people trying to out-do each other's extremely bad manners!

Re: Are Valiant Fans Special?
This community continually astounds me with its generosity and caring. There are both large and small examples of this each week if you go through the threads. It is the most helpful, and often interesting, group of people with a like interest that I have come across.
The fact that we are scattered all over the globe but can still come together to help someone or share some select info is wonderful. When a member finds a rare item, there is never envy for that but instead congrats and genuine support.
Are Valiant Fans Special? Indeed they are. Are VALIANTFANS.com Fans Special?
In a way like no others.
This membership personifies "pay it forward" and I couldn't be happier being a member of such an elite group.

Re: Are Valiant Fans Special?
Well considering the place you are asking this question, of course we are special!
Now go ask this question on some Marvel fansite!
But, in all seriousness, this is easily my favorite comic book message board. Not just for Valiant, but for even the other stuff. You can actually have an intelligent debate about a subject and not have to worry about it devolving into a flame war.

Re: Are Valiant Fans Special?
This is a great place to hang out, for sure. The online "jerk" factor is nearly non-existent.
I'd have to say that it's probably because we're fans of a comic line that came out over 20 years ago and then stopped publishing; so I'm willing to bet that our age demographic is substantially older than you'll find elsewhere.
Since Marvel and DC have been publishing continuously, their fans don't necessarily have that 20 year old anchor creating an demographic age ripple in their reader base. Of course they have fans that have been with them for 20 years, but they also have fans that have been with them for 2 years and 5 years and 10 years, etc.
If that makes any sense.

Re: Are Valiant Fans Special?
I don't know, I think there's a good chance it only could have happened, or at least only could have been sustained this long, for Valiant, and that's for two reasons, one old and one new.
The old reason is that when somebody new (the following has a strong possibility of describing the current poster) starts digging through cheap boxes for something to read and discovers Valiant, he discovers something really cool that was unique then, and still holds up extremely well today. No offense to any fans of Ultraverse, Malibu, Defiant, etc. but I feel the same cannot necessarily be said across the board. There are blips of greatness, sure, but overall there's a lot of good reasons for those staying in the cheap boxes.
The new reason is the new Valiant. Not just the fact that it exists, although obviously that helps to keep a community thriving. It's because VEI completely defies the odds. Generally speaking, a company that is legitimately run by the fans, for the fans doesn't have a chance in hell of succeeding. As much as people like to belittle the big two for going too far in the opposite direction, you need to strike a balance in the creative and business end of things in order to garner any sort of long term (or, oftentimes, even short term) success. Somehow, lightning struck the grave of Valiant or something, and we got the right person - the right FAN - to take over the reins. So now we've got a company that has everything we love about the old Valiant - the (for the most part) tightly plotted universe, the great characters, the feeling of something important getting going in the world of comics - but we also have a company that listens to us, that understands what we want to see (and, in some cases, knows exactly how to separate us from our paychecks).
So, kudos to everyone involved with vf.com for keeping the flame alive, and kudos to VEI for turning it into an enormous towering inferno with which we shall collectively singe the nosehairs of the world!

Re: Are Valiant Fans Special?
I think this is a great place to come and hang out, waste some time, get into some debates with frenemies and watch VEI grow into something special once again.
Are we special? Not sure how to quantify that... but for whatever reason, we've all ended up here, passionate about Valiant and we tend to put aside most of our differences to do some pretty special stuff.
Viva la Valiant!!!

Re: Are Valiant Fans Special?
This place would feel a lot more special if I ever actually got the ice cream that everybody keeps teasing me with in every poll.
When I hear the word "special" my spidey-sense starts to tingle a bit, because I worry that it is a small leap from "special" to "entitled", and I've never felt entitled as a fan. I think we are all equal in that regard, and we should never feel "entitled" in any way.
I've met lots of great folks on this board, some of whom have become some of my best friends.
I feel that I could sit down with anyone from this board, kick back, and have a good time. That's pretty rare, and in that way, maybe it is special.

Re: Are Valiant Fans Special?
When I came back into comics along with the 2012 relaunch of Valiant. This was the first message board I joined. It remains the only one I am a part of. And yes, this is a special place. It is generally ALWAYS positive, which is a beautiful thing. The creators stop by to chime in, which is incredible, and the guys running the company post here, answer questions, and more.
So yes, this is a special place indeed, and one of the few websites I'm on every day.
A genuine THANK YOU for being here, being a part of this, and allowing me to be a part of it as well.
Much respect.
