Great episode. Listened to it while driving to Vegas.

Nice to hear BTE, Rufus and Blood in the background.

Just finished listening to SDCC Episode 1, and I've got to say, if I ever get to go, the only way TO go, is to go with you guys. At least Elveen...dude can get in ANYWHERE, and knows everybody.
This post has been carefully constructed so as to add absolutely nothing to any discussion or topic.

All you need are the 2 lessons hammered home this week:

#1) Be nice.

#2) Do the best you can to get it together.

Thanks for the quick upload. I will try to go to SDCC next year, if not, try to make it for poker night.

I cannot imagine Dr Solar and Elveen running away from zombies. Hillarious.

i'm up to #54 right now from listening to all of them from the beginning and I have admit I was a bit relieved that Zeph (or the dude that always changes his name or whatever) retired. Don't get me wrong he's very knowledgeable and stuff but sometimes he was a big aggravating and arrogant. and didn't seem like he was having much fun doing it. I enjoyed him more on the earlier episodes but I think he picked a good time to quit.

Things did get a bit tense between myself and Zeph towards the end, but he did contribute a lot of knowledge, attitude, and enthusiasm over the years that helped really get the show rolling.

Enjoyed the show guys! Thanks for keeping those of us who couldn't make it to out to SDCC and all the Valiant festivities in the loop.

As someone who has never commissioned a sketch, is there a general rule of thumb for cost? I'm sure it can vary wildly. I looked up Mike Allred commissions once and it was $1000, but how about young upcoming artist and some of the mid-tier guys?

It really does all depend. Some are free, I would say an average is $40-$60 for a head sketch and $60-$200 for a commission. Some are much, much more.

I haven't gotten too many sketches/commissions, but the first thing that I do, if a price is not listed at the artist's booth, their website, etc. ...is ask what they charge? Then I show them the format for the commission that I want it on (comic book cover, large page, small page, etc.). You'd be surprised that sometimes an artist will charge very little and even give you a free sketch sometimes (especially when using the two rules we mentioned this weekend: 1) Be Nice 2) Keep it Together...lol).

Also, give the artist a reasonable amount of time to finish the commission. The only one I received from SDCC was a cover sketch by Rob Schrab, creator of Scud: The Disposable Assassin. He told me he only needed two hours, and charged only $20 for the commission; while he ended up going a bit over in time, we communicated the whole way, and he was even getting the "Con Crud" while drawing it and ended up having to run to the bathroom when he was done :( In this case, I paid $35 for the work; he well-deserved the tip and while I wish I could have paid more in this case, his friends at the booth were very appreciative of the gesture.

Hope this info helps :)

Good advice.

At past Cons i've gotten very nice commissions from Sean Chen for $100 (see my gallery ;) ) Also if you keep going back to artists, if they start remembering you at future cons, and you have a repor with them, even if they raise their price thy usually cut you a break.

I can say from experience this is VERY true.

Well, those prices are better than I thought they'd be. Thanks for the feedback!

I'd love to get a sketch from Rob Schrab. My brother and I loved some Scud.

I didn't even know he was there, and when I talked with him, he was a TRUE gentleman! Very appreciative that he had a fan out there. I love his work. Scud was THE book for me way back in the day when it was still with Fireman Press.

Price varies a lot.

I paid a total of $80 for the two commissions I got:

These are by less known artists, but their work is fantastic.

This compares with some of the other stuff I inquired about. Joe Benitez (Lady Mechanika) was charging $150 for a head shot, $300 for a full figure. Esad Ribic was at least $500 for a commission, and was charging $300 or $400 for sketch covers (which he doesn't like doing).

True story, .......

Right after the panel was over, V-Ditti said to me, "go get your gold and I'll sign it "first signed copy"".

His idea, but I'm stoked to have it! I believe that: BTE, Greg, and me are in the "first signed" club. :thumb:
