Re: Dr. Tomorrow #1 Discussion

I legit think it's awful. Like worst of the year writing bad. Three issues of absolute snoozefest.

Re: Dr. Tomorrow #1 Discussion

Listening to VCR 1) Did any of the guys read the original Acclaim Doctor Tomorrow? This version is definitely a bit different, but not completely different. 2) Scratching my #2. VCR this week spoke insanely highly of the absolutely dreadful Visitor series which answered this question of what they th...

Re: Dan DiDio Ousted From DC Comics

My post on a friend's FB link to the story.

I completely bailed on DC 10 years ago with the New 52 and was mostly on the way out for a few years before that. I feel like part of that was Didio's influence on the line.

This issue made it clear to me that Brett Booth isn't the best option for this type of story.
Even as a fan of his stuff, I have to agree.

Re: Official Bloodshot Trailer is here!

I somehow missed any discussion of this getting a PG-13 rating. How the heck is that gonna be true to the comic. I basically wanted to watch this for 2 reasons: 1. Vin Diesel stabbing a dude in the neck with his own broken radius/ulna 2. Eating a full on live cow to replenish nanites. I now don't i...

Re: Dr. Tomorrow #1 Discussion

This was a lot more fun than I expected it to be. And those last two pages! I often find Jim Towe's art inconsistent, particularly on Youngblood, but here it's mostly good. A couple wonky/overly cartoony panels, but mostly good. I can't tell if all his mouths look similar or if the designs are speci...

The Visitor #3 Discussion

The story here is just so very bad. Whether it's little things like talking about DNA testing blood and then immediately contaminating the sample by licking it to see if it's "coppery" to the endless feeling 3-page sequence of discussions overusing -sama and -san to the completely unnecessary last p...

Bloodshot #0 Discussion

This is the most coherent Bloodshot comic in some time. It's still got Seeley wording quirks that pull me out of the story for a blip, but otherwise enjoyable. It's unclear where in the timeline this taking place other than after Harbinger Wars 2. And it's also unclear why this is a #0 other than th...

Re: (Re-)Reading Birthquake through The End (aka Years 4 & 5)

Thanks for reading! And the terribly named "Birthquake" was more akin to "Marvel Now!" in that it was just a marketing thing. Granted, for Valiant, it was a BIG marketing thing. Marvel just restarted all their current titles and mildly shook up creative teams (if at all). Birthquake was ongoing titl...

Oh, man...

Can I break nearly 30 years of Valiant completionism to skip this? I hated Hunt's work on Wildstorm and Bunn never works for me.

I doubt it, but, man, Iam not going to like this at all. Maybe I'll have the bar so low they exceed?

This is reaching Rising Spirit levels of bad. Pull the plug Valiant!
As bad as Rising Spirit was, at least I understood what that series was trying to do. There's somehow even less direction to this series.

I think Booth's art is a heavy distraction from just how bad the (lack of) story is here.

Re: Bloodshot (2019) #6 Discussion

When the art isn't saddled by the blue, red, or fire color scheme, it is really entertaining. Flawed, but entertaining. But fun art can't overcome absolute trash writing, which this is. Oh, and nice editing too - "He's grows bigger..." 2/5

Roku #4 Discussion

It's obvious no one wants to talk about this trainwreck, but I just read #4 and I need to vent. Let me preface any art discussion with the fact that I've been a Ramon F. Bachs fan for 20 years (going back to his Joker/Mask and Star Wars work). I genuinely like his style and his work. There are even ...

Quantum & Woody (2020) #1 Discussion

*sigh* This didn't really work. The art doesn't match the surprisingly grim tone. And it's over-written to a fault. We don't need everything explained and re-explained. I actually liked the general premise of this issue, but the execution didn't work for me. As I'm re-reading the original 90s run, I...

Re: Is Valiant jinxed?

It's pretty telling that ALL (or at least nearly all) the advertising for Bloodshot trades is around the Swierczynski run on the book.

Although if someone bought a Seeley/Booth issue, I doubt they'd be induced into pumping money into an "old" trade.

Meanwhile, while I really liked this, I found it to be the least engaging of the three issues. No real tension. Touched on some good stuff, just very low key. And still loving the art here.

Struggling with the idea that the VCR guys all gave this a slightly lower rating than Bloodshot #5.

Yeah, I'm really struggling with the lack of clarity when it comes to the story. Standard problem I have with Seeley though.

The convention scenes were fun (although seemed to be outdoors). And I dug the art a ton. Except for that knee early on.

Plot twist - how many VH1 readers have never read a VEI book? *raises hand* -slym That's incomprehensible. As much as I liked VH1 back in the day, I don't think it hold up quite as much in a re-read, and falls far short of the best of VEI. Completely disagree. Having just read/re-read them all, the...

Re: I Dislike Jack Boniface

Bob Hall’s Shadowman was really good. Loved it as a non-save-the-world, gritty, self contained series. My biggest disappointment with VEI is definitely Shadowman and Eternal Warrior. They took my 2 favorite V1 characters and messed them up. However, VEI also gave us great X-O and Harby series, so t...

I'm with you. I only recently read VH1 version and fell in love with the character. Everything since (currently reading Acclaim and have read all VEI versions) have fallen short of the original. For me, it's the constant focus on Deadside and what it all is and trying to make something so weird "rea...

Yeah, well...that's, like, your opinion, man! Seriously though, I can see that this run could be to your taste and some of it could be great to you .
